Nigeria: What Next?

By Victor Enyinnaya on April 3, 2023

Last week the Nigeria Press Organisation set up a - nine- member committee to serve as Ombudsman.

Let’s quickly acknowledge that NPO has stayed for too long before this time. One will say without any form of prejudice the print media has long being in serious comatose.  Print journalism long went to bed not even as toothless bulldog but a dead lion. Print media now divided along ethnic lines, each supporting its own.

Print media was at its best during the period when the likes of former Ogun State governor and former Managing Director of the old great day Daily Times, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Ray Ekpu, late Tunji Oseni, Late Dele Giwa, Late Tony Momoh, Dan Agbase, Yakubu Mohammed, late George Izobo, late Chris Okolie, Felix Adenike, Peter Ajayi, late Innocent Oparadike, late Andy Akporugo, Nojeem Jimoh etc carried the battle for vibrant and independent press to even the dreaded Military regimes. I am privileged to have gone through the tutelage of some of the above mentioned core professionals.

In those days newspaper editorials had swept out governments which prompted such sitting government to close down media houses or take over the newspaper as was the case with old great days Daily Times. Some of those rave making newspapers are still around but sadly are like being held captive. The then most vibrant, dreaded and blunt Lagos/Ibadan press axis now looked conquered.

If the Nigerian print media has been captured like almost the entire citizenry, honestly, it has not been this bad for the Nigeria Press before that is the root cause of these anomalies in governance today, because the press has been conquered and made to divide along ethnic lines.  Because they are harassed, intimidated, detained and even announced kangaroo imprisonment, they have gone under hiding while some have decided to sing the songs which the authorities like to hear. The polity no doubt is already heated and the ruling party APC has been on the eye of the storm causing distractions and disaffections among Nigerians, a character or niche the propaganda party has carved for herself from inception to date.

The party has been causing lots of ripples across the country creating much falsehood using proxies to carry out their notorious plans that many highly informed Nigerians have come to know is their usual game. Informed analysts believe that all the back and forth witnessed today for the bad of it are all being originated by APC to look as if it is real.

All these intrigues and counter intrigues are instigated by the ruling party, APC.  These things are not new to the Nigerian people as such was greatly witnessed before the elections where APC  engaged itself in face off  that looked like real in the eyes of many unsuspecting Nigerians but to keen observers it is their way of deceitful antics.

Nigerians are yet to come over APC naughtiness during currency redesigning where El-Rufai and some APC Governors went to Court and the outbursts of former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu acting as if they are against Mahammadu Buhari, Minister of Justice and Governor of Central Bank. But at last, it became obvious that it was all calculated plans to deceive Nigerians to have their way.

At the end of the day, the fake hue and cry came to nothingness as the hen was home to roost showing clearly this con political party APC which ruined the country round and round has nothing to offer only to be creating distraction here and there to pave their way to Aso Rock with tricks.

This same APC in 2015 threatened to form a parallel government if election of that year was rigged.  This very APC threw every caution to the wind not ready to obey democratic norms in its violent struggle to wrestle power from PDP. They were breaking laws and constituted authorities of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

It is this same APC that is beating its drum and at the same time dancing deeply but steadily pointing accusing fingers at the oppositions especially Labour Party in order to paint the steadily fledging political movement in bad light before the Nigerian public.  However, their antics have failed flat as Nigerians from all shades have come out in Unisom to continue to reject them and all their lies.

The whole World knew Labour Party as ardent advocate of non-violence that is the mainstream gospel of its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi.  The massive movement--- Obidents are known more for advocacy than violence. You don’t need to look too far to vividly point at a violent, blood bathing dripping political party in Nigeria without looking at the APC direction.

A party that deceived Nigerians in 2015 via falsehood and capped it in 2019 and the current state of the nation is the resultant effect.  APC has disfigured Nigeria, a clime where justice, fair play, free and credible election cannot hold, no matter the angle one may look at it from, there is no how APC can win any lection in this country again except through the method it employed during this charade of polls in full connivance with the electoral umpire INEC.

This self-styled election held on February 25 especially and capped on March 18 which have raised much dust locally and internationally, failed to meet with a resemblance of any acceptable election which pitched Nigerians especially Ndigbo on the receiving end as unleashed by APC supporters in Lagos State where vote suppression, violence and other corrupt maneuvers ruled the length and breadth of the supposedly metropolitan State.

Let be said unequivocally that BAT and his APC debased the 2023 Presidential election and at the same time his violent prune APC supporters are battle ready constituting nuisance everywhere to the citizenry going about their normal businesses.

These pains in the neck to man APC supporters have taken over social and traditional media pushing out their plans to let hell loose if the President - select is stopped from being sworn in come May 29.  We all witnessed the mood of the country when INEC selected Bola Tinubu and announced him as President – elect, there has been an uneasy calm since that fraudulent exercise which INEC announced in the midnight.

There have been plots upon plots directed solely at Labour Party supporters.  APC is currently plotting to break the water tight like LP ranks as they faked suspension of its national Chairman, Abura from the party.  The LP high command has come out swiftly to say it was one of those APC lies or games.

What we all witnessed was not elections rather it was pure brazen armed robbery, violation, electoral hijack, suppression and intimidation which is a showcase of derail in the democratic process, pure “democrazy”.  It will be safe also if you say it is ballot coup that produced an illegitimate President. On the day he was announced, the entire country was like graveyard.  In short, there was a blanket of gloom over the nation it remained so, but sadly what APC has resorted to now is to be sponsoring lies against Labour Party, spreading wicked and unfounded lie against LP and her supporters, what APC cannot destroy, does not exist. Nigerians must not allow this fraud of the 21st century to sell through because it will never help our democracy, otherwise, Nigeria might be heading for doom.

APC is desperately fighting bitterly against the LP left, right and centre because the few places Peter Obi visited after the charade of February 25, Presidential election, have been reverberation of joy by the voters who voted for him.  APC saw all these. This APC saw that there was no way in hell they could legitimize their illegitimacy. The election petitions are already in tribunal, and so the judges have seen the mood of the people.

APC knew that it is no longer business as usual; they have seen that evidences abound to prove that the election was marred by irregularities and moreover INEC did not follow its own rules. Their next stop is now attempts to delegitimize Peter Obi and the Obeidients movement. They have adopted various illegal methods to do this, most of them being through propaganda and attempting to rewrite the true narrative of the very campaign and elections which we witnessed; they started by attempting to paint Peter Obi and LP as regional  and religious party respectively.

APC has met fierce pushback on that. Now, they have also studied the election petitions and realized they cannot win. That is the reason why the anti-lgbo agenda has been on overdrive and attempting desperately to drive rancor between lgbos and Yorubas.  APC have also employed all forms of despicable propaganda to attempt to tarnish the soaring image of Obidienst.  One of them dropped with airplane gimmick last week, pretending to be one of the Obidents so that the Obidient movement could be labeled a terrorist movement, and people are just watching?

The anomalies that followed the elections have laid to the conclusion that one segment of the country has come to an end. Nigeria cannot continue like this as it is a shame to the entire Africa. Imagine what the World press has been saying about the elections. We have come to an end. We better recognize it and accept that the end has come.

As it is presently, where is Nigeria heading to?  Some people are calling for Interim government because they say; they cannot allow illegitimate government to govern them. What has gone amiss after the highly expensive election which INEC promised to post sterling polls?  Alas, they failed woefully to deliver and muddled up the entire set up which has placed Nigeria in danger list today; APC would destroy the entire country if care is not taken.

As we wait for the answer to be provided, we will keep shooting hard till next week. Meanwhile we wait!!.
