Of NFF and Salisu’s ‘forgiveness’

By Daily Sports on October 25, 2021

There is no how this trouble with Nigeria will abate because of insincerity and corruption incorporated that has long became the lot of this nation.

For the records when Muhammadu Buhari was prompted to power by both his aged long allies and the later-day saints led by Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu falsely teamed up against the government of President Goodluck Jonathan run up to 2015 general election little did the short sighted knew that this kind of misrule in all facets that fell Nigeria would soon took hold.

This mischievous Buhari/APC regime came with change mantra and the lip service fighting of corruption deceit, yet those that sold their right for port of protégé at the beginning became brutally beaten hands down when Buhari most of us knew began to bare his flanges’.

Now let’s go straight to the nitty-gritty of this week’s discourse. On Thursday, October 20, 2021 Salihu Mohammed, General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), announced to usually unsuspecting Nigeria football fans worldwide the decision by the executive committee of the body to return clean bill of health verdict on Salisu Yusuf, former assistant coach of the Super Eagles that took tribe from not fewer than three players to cause their invitation to the camp of Nigeria’s flagship team, the Super Eagles.

That story trended like wide fire and to divert peoples’ attention the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF promptly suspended the former coach of Kano Pillars at least to keep public eyes and comments off him.

Yusuf was on the cooler like while his salaries and other entitlements were steadily being paid by NFF.

To truly exhibit the criminality that is the middle name of this NFF regime, the same people packaged former Eagles captain Joseph Yobo as assistant coach of the team to like Salisu Yusuf is gone. The cat was let off the bag by the Scribe of the apex football governing body in the land Mohammed that Salisu Yusuf has been recalled to duty after he was not found guilty but the statement added that though the act he committed did not affect the performance of the Super Eagles in that particular game. Haba!

One was not dumbfounded at all because it is normal recurrence in Nigeria where absurdity takes centre stage and the person at the centre being hailed to high heaven.

For the records again when this Salisu Yusuf corruption scandal broke this columnist raised alarm on this page calling on EFCC and ICPC agencies to go after Yusuf but like others like him that patriotic call failed on deaf ears. Salisu Yusuf was neither invited for questioning nor detained for even one second.

Nothing absolutely nothing came off it until Thursday, October 21, when announcement that he has been let off the hook, reinstating someone that obviously collected bribe from players and invited them to Super Eagles camp. Yusuf was kept on the sidelines until now that no attention is on him. But why is Nigeria and her so called leaders like this. Why has things gone this bad in a country a sitting government ‘s sing-song is that it is fighting corruption though Salisu Yusuf’s corruption case is not the only one that has been treated like non-issue but why must this nonsense continue.

No doubt Amaju Pinnick’s regime in NFF has been characterised with monumental corruption and scandals and his round the clock efforts to settle those that mattered in this government has helped him in no smaller measure and way to steady him in office and easily given him the name as a cat with nine lives.

Let us face it squarely, for how long would the country face this nasty direction. Many corrupt cases Ministry of Justice proffered against the NFF leadership all of a sudden became non-existent which instantly confirms that the football governing body pronto played its ball too perfectly well in the game against Justice Minister Malami led team.

The issue that led to Salisu Yusuf’s being told to go home and sin no more remains a misery and more than meets the eye. Corruption which President Buhari and his co-travelers rode to power with steers them on the face and they remove such and pretend that they neither see them nor hear about the open truth.

When nobody’s looked the way of Yusuf’s corruption issue paints sad picture that Nigeria is not ready to rid herself of this plague she wears like cloth. Where has the often flaunted Buhari’s integrity and ‘zero ‘tolerance to corruption?  It remains sad that corrupt coach is allowed to go home unpunished but rather patted him on the back direct signal that he did nothing to warrant any wrong doing on him.

My take on this remains resolute that Salisu Yusuf should be tried for corruption by either the EFCC or ICPC as only such transparent process would be the best way to go if nothing to show the more civilized football World that Nigeria can for once get it right. The curiosity of its all is that Salisu Yusuf admitted collecting the money the reason why Amaju Pinnick and his committee acted the way and manner they have done not only left soured taste in the mouth but also left indelible and ugly trend in our football system though corruption personified.

As we continue to knock gently on doors of EFCC, ICPC, Malami’s Ministry of Justice despite its recent unholy alliance with NFF because of what exchanged hands justice must be done for once on corruption not making something out of nothing when false alarms are often raised when it is or concerns opposition who the present powers that be never like such face(s).

We will not relent until Salisu Yusuf and his likes are brought to justice or book which will stem this steady slide. This one corruption too many in NFF and sports circle even Ministry of Sports. Last week it was Emmanuel Zira’s confession on what went wrong in Nigeria Basket Ball Federation (NBBF).
