Dear readers, I was in Benin Edo State for the burial of one of the daring sports journalists in Nigeria, late Anthony Obaseki. It was heartbreaking seeing the crowd that came to pay their last respect to the man they described in unionism as very kind, jovial and selfless.
Read details of the event in Daily Sports today.
Take it or leave it, the storm is fast gathering and the hen would soon be home to roost as Sports Minister Sunday Dare, true type has vowed to interfere in football, by extension the reorganization of the Super Eagles, both the players that would be invited and technical crew..
I don’t know who is advising Dare and how far he would go on that his mission. I already tagged it impossible, judging from past experiences of Ministers that dared try such. They all ended up burning their fingers terribly and at the end of the day, they were the worst for it in all ramifications.
I have refused to believe that there is one spirit that lures such Ministers to interfere in football affairs instead of concentrating on doing same with the rest of sports. I must say here that Sunday Dare, when in the early stages, my colleagues were falling all over themselves in praise singing him, when he was appointed, I did say that this man is a pretender of the first order. Therefore I refused to join the bandwagon.
As usual, l was called names by his stooges and clappers. I did not give them attention as doing so would be given them unnecessary publicity, the fools never deserved.
I could remember very vividly in one of the write ups in this page where I described Dare as a pretender to the job. His mission was to fulfill the will of his masters and that at the end of the day he would only court controversies and turn thing upside down therefore leaving sports worst than he met it.
He, like the leopard would show his colours when the chips were down and he had done so in Basketball and others and now football, where the eyes of many past Sports Ministers always turned to. The game is banana peel and those that stepped on it never survived, the last count being Solomon Dalung, the one Sports Minister that ate with both hands. It choked him badly as one continues to wonder till date why he is still walking freely on the streets of Plateau State, to the point of nursing ambition of becoming or contesting as Governor of the State in 2023.
Wonders will never end in this absurd country, Nigeria yet the Buhari and APC government disturb our ear drums with their often mere slogan of fighting corruption, hypocrites all.
I digress. Yes, Dare has began to show his true colours and if he is not stopped or cut to size would only succeed in causing confusion which has engulfed his party and its leaders and now blowing open. Sunday Dare is on suicide mission and so instead of him doing the right thing, he would want to embark on this in order to destroy and divide the attention of the NFF whose President has given notice that he would give a shot at the number position in CAF even before its President, Ahmad, was hammered suspension by FIFA recently.
Sunday Dare is on a dirty job. He is sent to do and to perfectly execute it He would start with his nonsense trouble shooting diversion so as for it not to look as premeditated stuff. It has political under tones, knowing that Amaju Pinnick as crafty political football administrator would go far in his spirited quest to ascend the plumb number one seat in CAF.
The Delta State born football buff has goodwill across Africa and his sympathisers also cut across the length and breath. He went through the tutelage of certain grand master of crafty football politics in both Africa and the World until something went wrong. You cannot still ignore him in football who’s who in African continent.
Let me make it clear that I am not an apostle of Amaju Pinnick. You dear readers have known me over these years since this column came on, that I am one columnist that calls a spade by its name. Pinnick has done well but as human he has his short comings and I don’t hold him on such basis rather on the measure of what he does right or wrong, aside the usual human error.
I am not his fan and such does not mean I would not point rightly to the ones he’s strong in. We meet one on one on the course of this job and as a fearless watch dog, he does not hold me for the obvious right things or the constructive criticisms, I have offered from my critical angle.
I don’t hold him responsible for shutting Daily Sports out of his assignments and calculations, as it is left for him to extend invite to who or media houses he deems fit. However this job must go on. Some of us have been here reporting before they came for their assignments and would be here by His grace when they complete and leave.
Again, I digress. I am still discussing Sunday Dare and his avowed mission to openly interfere in who laces his boots for the Super Eagles and her technical crew. I saw it coming. He has recruited media men and women that would do the dirty job for him and they are rearing to go. Unless his masters say otherwise, he is hell bent on doing that simply to get at Amaju Pinnick and his CAF Presidential ambition. He and his masters know that Amaju is a goal getter and never say die political football administrator, who dare tactically and strategically and gets who he wants. Let’s see how far Sunday Dare and his people would be able to confront the dare devil squad led by Amaju Pinnick.
Watch out, media attacks and something near such would be directed at the NFF supremo and like a cat with nine lives he is, he would come out clean. Sunday Dare is a non-starter and politics in the larger society is quite different from what obtains in football and Pinnick holds sway here.
As he woefully failed in athletics and Basketball adventures, as man without shame and colour, he would bite the dust again in his vengeance undertaker’s job in NFF. As shameless Nigerian politician that such name fits, he would bother less because his image means nothing to him.
