Tinubu’s $100k reward for five AfroBasket titles, says Kida

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 15, 2025

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation and Chairman of NNPCL, Musa Kida, has said the $100,000 reward given to each D’Tigress player by President Bola Tinubu should be seen as recognition for the team’s sustained dominance over the past decade, rather than a single victory, The PUNCH reports.

Kida said the reward was not excessive when measured against the team’s sustained record.

“If you ask me as a basketball president, I would say it is 100 times five. If the reward for winning AfroBasket is $100,000 this time around, we have won it five times, so that should count for something,” he said in an interview with M4S TV.

Tinubu’s package for the team, announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a reception at the Presidential Villa, included $50,000 for each member of the technical crew, a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate for all players and staff, and the conferment of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.

The team won their fifth straight continental title after beating Mali 78–64 in the final in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to extend their dominance in African women’s basketball.

Kida stressed that the players’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket title was the product of consistent work, monitoring and engagement by the federation.

“I am extremely proud of the girls. Anyone who has been called has always played her heart out,” he said, describing their success as an embodiment of the Nigerian fighting spirit.

He explained that since his assumption of office in 2017, the federation had maintained a seamless transition of players, ensuring performance levels remained high through constant assessment of their club performances and off-season training camps.

“We are constantly on their case every day, looking at what they are doing, so that once we meet, we are able to continue winning,” he said.

He also noted that the D’Tigress’ unbeaten in 29 games since 2015 is a record that is indisputable evidence of their status as “African queens”.

“No matter what happens, it is very clear they are African queens,” he said.
