Mendy Hopes To Emulate Drogba At Chelsea

Senegal international Edouard Mendy says he has a big responsibility after completing his move to English giants Chelsea.

The towering goalkeeper joined Chelsea on a five-year deal at a cost of £22 million ($29m) from French club Stade Rennais on Thursday.

Mendy will become the first African goalkeeper to play for the former Premier League champions.

The 28-year-old is looking forward to emulating African legends Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel, who enjoyed some success at Chelsea.

“Of course. Most of the biggest African talent has played for this team. Drogba, Essien, Eto’o, Mikel,” Mendy told the club’s official website.

“When you see that, you want to continue it. Regarding the goalkeeper, I am the first, so it really makes me very proud, and it’s also a big responsibility.”

The France-born shot-stopper is relishing playing in the Premier League following a successful 2019/20 season playing in Ligue 1.

“I’m waiting to see it live every weekend, but there are a lot of games, a lot of intensity, a lot of goals like this last weekend,” he added.

“It’s an attractive league, the stadiums are fantastic and when they are not shut the passion of the fans is incredible.”

Mendy was born to a Senegalese mother and a Bissau-Guinean father and he decided to play for Senegal.

He has played eight international matches for the Lions of Teranga. (African Football)
