Delta Force Football Club of Asaba have emerged winner of the 2016 Governor Ifeanyi Okowa Pre-Season Football Tournament after defeating highly rated J. Atete Football Club of Warri 6 – 5 in a penalty shoot-out after the game had ended goalless in regulation time.

Delta Force, which had entered into the final as underdogs after pipping Frestan Football Club of Lagos by a lone goal in the semi-final, had taken the game to J. Atete, which had been favourd to win having dominated football in Delta State as well as dispatching Ago Football Club of Lagos 3 – 0 in the semi-final.

Both sides, which would be campaigning in the Nigeria National League in the new season, created scoring chances but none could convert theirs, leading to a stalemate at the Sapele Stadium, with the mammoth crowd cheering them on due to the football artistry from both sides.

The Co-ordinator of the tournament, Mr John Tata, commended both sides for fair play, asserting that the standard on display was heartwarming as it was clear that both sides would represent the state well in the Nigeria National League.

“I believe we will do better in next edition am happy with the level of the teams’ display,” Tata said.

He also commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for supporting sports development, affirming that he had shown that sports would continue to thrive in the state, especially at the grassroots. He called on the private sector to partner with the State Government in taking sports to the next level.

Tata enjoined the private sector to be part of the annual Pre-Season Tournament which is aimed at developing football due to the fact that it is a platform where grassroots clubsides have the opportunity of facing established clubsides, thereby giving the young talents an opportunity to be spotted by established clubsides.
