One of Edo State’s main grassroots football clubs, Benin Warriors FC, will be having their traditional year-end ceremony with a tantalizing football match lined up between the present players of the club and past players, some of whom are playing professional football presently.
The match comes up on Monday, December 30, at the Ighodefeyi field in the Upper Sapoba area of Benin City, the state capital.
In the ranks of the former players (who would be known as All Stars) are also some guest players including one of the finest centre backs in Nigerian league football, Benjamin Tanimu of Bendel Insurance.
Imade Osarenkhoe, Bendel Insurance hit man, will likely partner sleeky Enyimba FC of Aba and national Under-23 invitee Anayo Iwuala in the All Stars attack in what could be a devastating partnership.
A spokesman for Benin Warriors said: “After one year of serious work by the players of this club, it is fitting to round up with a top class match. The current players are excited about meeting the old boys and while there will be a lot of smiles and happiness to meet up once again, both teams will want to end the year with a win and we expect a top game because of the high quality of players that will be on parade.”
Benin Warriors stunned Edo State in 2016 when, in their debut participation, they won the state league competition in a rollercoaster performance.
Anayo Iwuala, the fleet-footed striker, announced himself as a top prospect in that competition when he emerged the highest goal scorer of the state league.
He went on to play for the now defunct Kada Stars of Kaduna before signing for Delta Force in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) and then joining Enyimba just before the start of the current season.
Osarenkhoe is Bendel Insurance leading striker and is a graduate of Engineering from the University of Benin, where he was a football hero having played for the university’s football team.

The current set of Benin Warriors players include Edo State festival team invitee Clement Andrew, a fantastic wing back, as well as midfielder Kingsley Idahosa and winger Wisdom Uto – both of whom caught the eyes of scouts at the recently held Edo State edition of the Bayern Munich Youth Cup competition.
They have been subsequently invited to the state’s team in preparation for the national Bayern Munich Youth Cup that comes up early next year in Abuja.
Kick-off time for the match on Monday is 8:00 a.m.
