We want to make history again – Okoronkwo

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo says Nigeria are determined to retain their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title and further extend their dominance on the continent by winning a record 11th crown in Morocco, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The defending champions opened their Group C campaign against debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, with other fixtures against Zambia and Egypt still to come.

Should the Super Falcons finish top of Group C and hosts Morocco also emerge winners of Group A, both sides could meet in a blockbuster semi-final – in a repeat of last year’s final.

Despite the challenging route to the final, Okoronkwo insists the team’s focus remains firmly on lifting the trophy again.

“We want to repeat history and win it again. It is always good to win back-to-back titles. There is pressure, but we want to retain the trophy,” Okoronkwo told CAF.

“My role is to help the team, just as I expect the other 10 players on the field to do. Attitude and mentality will play a huge part.

“As long as we all have the right attitude and mentality, we will be fine.”

Nigeria are the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won 10 of the previous 13 editions.

The Super Falcons dominated the tournament after winning the first five editions from 1998 to 2006 before Equatorial Guinea ended their reign in 2008. Nigeria reclaimed the title in 2010 but again lost it to Equatorial Guinea in 2012. They returned to the summit with three consecutive triumphs in 2014, 2016 and 2018 before South Africa claimed the 2022 title.

The Falcons regained their continental crown at the 2024 WAFCON, which was staged in 2025, defeating hosts Morocco in the final to secure a record-extending 10th title.

Okoronkwo was one of Nigeria’s standout performers during that triumph, contributing two goals and a tournament-leading six assists as the Falcons completed their successful campaign.
