Confederation of African Football (CAF) Medical Committee member, Dr Peter Singabele, has said the Governor Seriake Dickson Football Tournament otherwise known as the Restoration Cup is a laudable idea that would produce talents for Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
Besides, he said the competition would positively engage the youths.
Speaking in his office in Yenagoa, the football administrator said grassroots competitions were the only way to expose talents, especially those in the hinterlands.
“I am happy with the Governor Seriake Dickson Football Tournament. As stakeholders, we always advocate for competitions like this because lots of talents will be discovered. In fact, I hope the tournament is organised annually so that it help engage the youths. Those who didn’t do well will want to do better the following year. Since it is community-based, it is a great idea,” Singabele said.
He however called on the organisers to ensure a thorough screening of the teams to avoid the use of mercenaries or professional footballers by some of the communities.
“I want the organisers to be strict with the screening process. You know the prize money is huge and it will attract even some established players or even mercenaries outside Bayelsa State. I think it will defeat the purpose if this is not checked.”
He urged youths to channel their strength to sports activities as it is one of the fast growing sectors in the country and all over the world.
