It is safe to say that since his January transfer to Manchester United from Arsenal, Alexis Sanchez has not lit up his club and the premier league like he did at Arsenal.
With the Gunners, Sanchez alongside German Mezut Ozil were kings, two brilliant players with exceptional qualities who stood out match after match as the club’s biggest stars and the premier league’s finest.
Sanchez in particular weighed in with quality goals and sometimes looked like a one-man riot squad, and given the struggles of the Gunners in recent times, many felt that Sanchez was being held back from being even better.
So came the move to Jose Mourinho’s United.
Jose Mourinho broke the bank to make the Chilean – who was running down his contract at Arsenal – the best paid player at Manchester United this January.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved in the opposition direction, and many assumed that with Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Sanchez all in the same team, United would suddenly become a force to be reckoned with.
But things haven’t exactly gone to plan just yet. Pogba has suffered since Sanchez’s arrival, while Lukaku has struggled to forge a partnership with the Chilean.
Sanchez is also yet to hit the dizzying heights he hit at Arsenal, and Hamann isn’t convinced he ever will at Old Trafford.
“I’m not sure whether he has got the impact he had got three years ago,” said the Champions League winner.
“I think he’s in his late twenties now, he is a very physical player, you have to see how long he can play at a very good level or the top level.
“And I’m just not sure whether he is the same player that he was when he first came to Arsenal.”
Sanchez’s Red Devils take on bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford this weekend, and there would be no better time for the Chilean to prove Hamann wrong.
