Eguma: Rivers United must beat KCCA to stay alive in CAF Confederation Cup

By Daily Sports on June 19, 2017

Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma has admitted his team have to beat Kampala Capital City Council (KCCA) of Uganda on Tuesday to stay in reckoning in the CAF Confederation Cup.

KCCA won the reverse fixture 2-1 at the Phillip Omondi Stadium (Lugogo), Kampala on June 3; a result that lifted them from bottom to second place in Group A.

Tuesday’s game at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt therefore leaves little margin for error, for the Nigerian side especially as any result other than an outright victory could mean curtains as far as their aspirations of reaching the quarterfinals of the competition are concerned.

They are bottom of the standings with three points from as many matches.

“We are representing Nigeria and Nigeria is a very big country as far as football is concerned. It is a do-or-die game for us,” Eguma declared.

His opposite number at KCCA Mike Hillary Mutebi said they dominated the first encounter but failed to convert the many chances they created.

“We have not been effective so far as we should have won the (reverse fixture) 5-2,” he said.

“The result (of the first game) was not a true reflection of our dominance.

“The (issue) of goals difference is worrying so we have to try to outscore the opponent.

“In all our away games in the Confederation Cup, we have only failed to score against FUS Rabat and El-Masry; we always score away from home.

“Rivers United are a very good team but we (KCCA) are confident we can rub shoulders with them because we have tested the best.”

This is a very special KCCA squad after they achieved a league and cup double on Thursday, when they beat Paidha Black Angels 2-0 in the FUFA Cup final in Arua.
