Nigeria’s lone boxing entrant to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Efetobore Ajagba has quit the amateur ranks for a professional stint in the United States of America.
Ajagba, who narrowly lost out in the quarter-finals of the Olympic boxing event to Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko, had promised last year that he was done with the amateurs and would take his chances in the professional ranks.
But weeks and months of waiting for a reputable boxing camp to take him on in the United States finally materialized this week when he finally left the country in the company of ex-national team counterpart, Efe Apochi.
Both boxers left Lagos Tuesday night and are now in Houston, Texas.
Apochi and Ajagba were both bronze medalists at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, held in Glasgow.
In 2015, Ajagba was an African champion at that year’s African Games held in Congo Brazzaville where he dominated in the super heavyweight category.
Apochi disappointed at the event where he lost out in the final of heavyweight contest, coming up only with a silver medal.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Apochi confirmed that both boxers had already resumed training under the watchful eyes of their coach Ronnie Sheilds.
