YouTube videos of young Nigerian international attacker, Henry Onyekuru have sent Arsenal’s fan base into huge excitement regarding the prospects of his donning the Gunners colours next season after the club launched an official £6.8 million bid for his services.
Onyekuru's pace, dribbling abilities and lethal finishing for his Belgian first division club Eupen in the just ended Belgian league season, as seen on YouTube, has received hundreds of thousands of views, but a football journalist John Chapman has sought to temper the excitement.
Writing for Football.London newspaper, Chapman argues that, “Onyekuru is also far from the finished article and his education has not included team-play and putting in a shift.”
Chapman also adds that many of the goals shown on YouTube were scored in the less competitive Belgian ‘secondary’ division playoffs, which is an end-of-season competition for teams that finished in mid table and bottom of the Belgian top flight league.
“Potential suitors should be cautious for other reasons. Belgium’s ‘secondary’ playoffs, where Onyekuru scored half of his goals, frequently lack competitiveness and strikers can easily find wide-open spaces.”
19-year old Onyekuru is a product of the Qatar-based Aspire Academy, an academy that has come under criticism for searching for football talents as young as 6-year-olds and taking them to Qatar and Senegal for training. There are suspicions that the Aspire project is meant to groom talented players from all over the world to possibly represent Qatar in the 2022 world cup they will be hosting.
Onyekuru’s present club Eupen are owned by the Qatari owners of Aspire.
Meanwhile, some Arsenal fans are mocking the relatively cheap arrival of Henry Onyekuru and manager Arsene Wenger has come under criticism as is usual when he makes a cheap and young signing. But a legend of the club and former striker Ian Wright has called on Onyekuru to shut his critics up with his performances for Arsenal.
In a good luck message to Onyekuru, Wright said on twitter: “Remember watching the news when I signed for Arsenal, fans said: “Why are we signing him?”
“Good luck to you Henry. I found the way to shut them up.”
What celebrity Arsenal fan, Morgan, should understand about London terrorist who wore Arsenal’s jersey
One of Arsenal’s most notable fans, Journalist Piers Morgan recently wrote a moving essay for The Daily Mail in which he gave credible reasons why the UK should employ more Policemen to deal with the rising level of terrorist threats that country is currently facing.
In the piece Morgan criticised current Prime Minister Theresa May for having been instrumental in the laying off of lots of Policemen from service years ago and blames that for the pressure the UK police are coming under as they cope with terrorism.
But Morgan went a step further to assume that one of the terrorists who ran over people with a van and stabbed others to death in the streets of London last Saturday night was an Arsenal fan because he was wearing an Arsenal shirt while committing his murderous acts.
Morgan wrote: “this pitiful coward supported a team that was created by people who specifically made arms for the British military, the very institution he doubtless most despised as the very worst kind of ‘infidels’.
“If ever proof was needed of how stupid these people are, then this surely is it.”
Wearing a particular club’s jersey is no proof that one supports the club and Morgan should know this. Fans of clubs sometimes wear other club’s shirts while some people who have zero interest in football sometimes like putting on jerseys.
Until the UK investigators or other evidence reveal that this terrorist coward was a supporter of Arsenal, it’s wrong to reach that conclusion.
This seems as nitpicking, but it is good to stick with facts and not fuel ignorant people or football fans who may see this as a fit topic for banter.
Isaac Success spots more mature low cut as he holidays with friends in Benin City after disappointing first season with Watford
Its summer time in Europe. The time of year when most European leagues go on end of season break. Players travel to different destinations to cool off before they head back in a few weeks to preseason with their European clubs.
Nigerian striker Isaac Success is currently holidaying in his hometown of Benin City where he’s been enjoying the company of friends and family.
Strikingly, the burly attacker is sporting a new low cut hair style, away from the dreadlocks which he was carrying last season when he made a then record £12m move from Granada to English premier league campaigners Watford.
Last season was disappointing as far as league appearances were concerned for Success as injury and stiff competition for places conspired to ensure he only made a few starts for Watford and scored just one goal in the premiership.
But it wasn’t all a bitter season as he recently got a call up and made his debut for the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles.
Success new low cut hair was described by one grassroots coach as a sign of maturity. “He’s looking a more decent person with this new cut,” the coach said.
Success had said some years ago that despite his busy football schedule, he won’t ever forget his childhood friends and he’s living up to that vow. Since his arrival, friends have flocked to his house and he’s feted them and taken many out to exotic places in Benin City to catch some fun. He’s always available for photo shots with people and his warmness has really won him lots of admiration.
“He’s a good friend who doesn’t forget his roots. I’m so happy for him,” a friend enthused.
Success left Nigeria for Granada in 2013 after helping Nigeria’s Under-17 team to winning the cadet world cup held in the UAE. He played for Benin City based grassroots club, BJ Foundation before signing for Granada.
BJ Chairman and Manager Douglas Idahosa is very happy to see his young protégée, Success as well as other professional ex-players of the club back on holiday. He took to Facebook recently to welcome back home his stars. “Welcome home my boys Isaac Success, Erhun Obanor (Geuther Fourth, Germany), Bright Enobakhare (Wolverhampton Wanderers, England) and Priestley Irogue Thesaloniki, Greece. Who God has blessed no man can stop,” he wrote.
