It was supposed to be a cosy midnight sleep but it all turned awry for a young grassroots player simply identified as Osahon when a generator set mistakenly put inside the kitchen of the flat in which he and two others slept gassed them to death.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, May 21, in the Sapele road area of southern Benin city.
Neighbors narrated that Osahon and two other girls, one of whom was a guest, put on their about 1.5 KVA generator set outside the flat they were staying in following power outage in their area.
At night when the others were asleep, one of the girls carried the generator which was still on at the time, inside their kitchen and slept off.

The dangerous gas emissions from the generator seeped into the rooms of the occupants of the house and left them dead without any audible struggles or screams from the unfortunate victims.
Friends and fans of Osahon have been paying their tributes to the departed teenager who was a creative midfielder for a popular grassroots club, Hulk FC, in Benin.
“I can’t believe Osahon would just die like that. It’s really a big tragedy for the grassroots football community,” said one fan.
“What a loss of talent. This is too hard to take. If not for NEPA we wouldn’t be having such an ugly situation. Goodbye my captain,” cried a former team mate of the late player.
“He died at the time he seemed to be enjoying life the most. He was a happy soul,” a neighbour added.
Meanwhile, a Geographer Emmanuel Efetuli said that the death of the unfortunate victims is a reminder of what the effects of global Warming and chemical weapons.
“The generator smoke is very lethal and as we have seen here, all it takes to snuff out a life is just some inhaling by humans. The fact that the victims couldn’t struggle out of the flat shows how debilitating inhaling the poisonous gas can be. When we hear of the threats of global warming and chemical weapons, this (the death of Osahon and the two other girls) is what effects they can have.”
The video of the lifeless bodies of the victims of the generator gas has been on Facebook.
