The ongoing Edo state FA Cup has reached perhaps its most crucial stage, the semi final. It is the stage where the winning teams would pick up the ticket to play in the prestigious national confederations cup as state
Representatives. On Wednesday morning at the main bowl of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, fans are expected to throng in their thousands to watch two big teams of Edo club football, defending champions Ine Stars, Professional League Division 1 campaigners Bendel Insurance on parade.
The first match of the day, which kicks off at 9.am is between Ine Stars and Insurance. It’s a match that promises a lot of fireworks as Ine Stars look to reenact their last year's FA cup winning feat while Insurance are trying to address their miserable form in this competition in the last few years by going to win it and reconfirm their supremacy as the state's biggest club.
Ine Stars is a youthful, vibrant and well organised side based in Benin City which has maintained its tradition of churning out young quality players over the years. Just last year under the guidance of one of the best young Coaches in Nigeria Nnamdi Onuigbo, (he's also the manager of the club) Ine Stars battered experienced finalists Dynamite Force by 3-0 in a very entertaining final to lift the coveted FROT Group sponsored FA CUP.
The youthful energy, speed and skills and overall tactical superiority of Ine Stars was just too plain to see in that final game. Since then the team has become a major hub and market for top teams who look to sign young and extremely talented players at low cost.
This Cup winning Ine Stars team has produced no less than 5 of the quality players playing this season in NPFL and NNL teams. Last year’s captain Tony Ojeabulu signed for J Almassora CF in the Spanish 3rd division. All this is a testament to the club's productivity.
Yet again another set of young players have been promoted through the reliable and well organized youth system of the club and they have not disappointed. Ine Stars have so far scored 7 goals and conceded none as they marched to the semi finals of the FA cup. At the heart of Ine Defence is a young 15-year-old Timileyin Adeniyi. The lanky centre back has been given a surprise debut and fans have marvelled at how such a young kid is putting on a big-hearted display that belies his young age and physical frame.
Win or lose a big highlight will be the story of the excellence and quality that Ine Stars FC youth system represents.
The second semi final of the day comes up 3pm between BJ Foundation vs Dynamite Force.
