Yakubu makes winning debut for Coventry City

By Daily Sports on February 19, 2017

Yakubu Aiyegbeni fired blanks in Coventry City’s 2-1 win over Adedeji Oshilaja’s Gillingham FC in an English League One game played at the Ricoh Arena.

First half strikes from Kwame Thomas and George Thomas were all Russell Slade’s men needed to get past the visitors – who are placed 18th on the log.

‘The Yak’ replaced Kwame in the 68th minute for his first appearance for the team – and showed flashes of his old self but was unfortunate not to have registered his name of the scorers’ sheet.

His 80th minute effort was saved by Stuart Nelson after a he was assisted by Dion Kelly-Evans. Seven minutes later, his header crept wide the goal post after a fine delivery from Andy Rose.

Despite the victory, Coventry City remain at the base of the table with 25 points from 32 games. They host fellow relegation strugglers Swindon Town in their next game on February 25. (Goal.com)
