MFM fail to close gap on Plateau Utd; Enyimba beat Akwa Utd to move up

By Daily Sports on February 10, 2017

MFM FC missed the chance of trimming Plateau United’s lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) when they lost 0-1 at ABS FC on Thursday.

The league’s top scorer Stephen Odey started on the bench for the second time this season as MFM head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu preferred youngster Adebayo Waheed to start in the game at the Kwara State Stadium.

ABS FC head coach Henry Makinwa listed Adeshina Issa Gata from the start with Ossy Eugene dropping to the bench, thereby making just one change to the team that started at Kano Pillars last Sunday.

The game was lively enough to keep the ABS faithful in the stadium on the edge of their seats but failed to produce goals in the first 45 minutes.

The only time the ball landed at the back of the net in the first half was in the sixth minute when Adebayo Waheed scored from Sikiru Olatunbosun’s assist. But his goal was chalked off for offside by referee Ben Onyika.

Mohammed Mohammed and Oyedeji were also constant threats to MFM but could not produce that cutting edge in the final third for ABS.

The second half also had a recurrent pattern like the first until the 73rd minute when ABS won a spot kick after the ref ruled that Ebuka Anaekwe was felled in MFM’s box.

On 74 minutes, Oyedeji made no mistake from 11 metres by sending MFM goalkeeper Ospino Egbe the wrong way for the winning goal.

Despite the defeat in Ilorin, Ilechukwu’s men remain in second position with 13 points but four points behind table-topping Plateau United.

Seven-time champions Enyimba left it late against Akwa United. They defeated Akwa Untied 1-0 at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

Enyimba captain Mfon Udoh volleyed in Enyimba’s winner after Ibrahim Mustapha's acrobatic attempt fell nicely for him. Udoh has now scored four goals and his winner lifted his club into fourth place with 13 points. (© supersport.com)
