El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri on Sunday beat former league champions Enyimba International FC of Aba 1-0 in a 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture played in Maiduguri.
The Match Day 6 fixture was watched by a full house at the 20,000-capacity El-Kanemi Sports Centre.
The home team took advantage of the massive support and dominated most parts of the encounter, but fell short of converting many scoring chances in the process.
Hussain Muhammad scored the only goal of the encounter in the 78th minute when he cashed in on a defensive error by the visitors.
After the game, both coach Ladan Bosso of El-Kanemi and Enyimba’s coach Gbenga Ogunbote expressed satisfaction with their players’ performance throughout the encounter.
“We knew it was going to be a tough match, so we trained hard and it paid off,” Bosso said at the post-match conference.
He said the victory would boost his team’s morale towards making great impact in the league this year.
“Last year we finished 8th on the table, but this year our target is to finish among the top three, and I think we are moving towards achieving that goal,” Bosso said.
On his part, Ogunbote described the match as difficult.
“The match has been won and lost no doubt. Actually the home team frustrated our game plan by denying us any space to move.
“But we are going back to the drawing board to prepare for the remaining league matches.’’
In Ibadan, hosts Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) defeated visiting Rivers United Football Club of Port Harcourt 2-1 in a 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture.
It was a match full of suspense as the home team fluffed many goal chances.
NAN reports that 3SC would have been six goals up in the first half, but for the misfiring in front of goal.
Eighteen minutes into the game, 3 SC secured their first goal through Faleye Sunday.
The visiting side equalised in the 25th minute, after a counter attack. The goal was scored through Lukman Mohammed’s header.
In the 66th minute of the game, Jide Apena however set the hosts on the winning path with 3SC’s second goal.
Coach Fatai Amoo later told newsmen that it was a great victory for the 3SC team, adding that they would work hard to sustain the tempo.
He said the team was getting it right, and that it was a gradual process that would lead to the desired height.
“We appreciate our teeming fans for their support and patience, and we promise them our best in the other matches ahead,’’ the 3SC coach said. (NAN)
