Hosts Gabon were knocked out of the African Nations Cup after a 0-0 draw with Cameroon.
Hugo Broos’ Cameroon qualified from Group A following the stalemate with Burkina Faso topping the group after a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau.
Gabon only had themselves to blame after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s awful early miss in Libreville while Denis Bouanga hit the post in stoppage time.
The hosts drew all three games to finish third in the group.
President Ali Bongo had visited the squad before the game and they responded with a lightning start where they should have gone ahead.
Bouanga had already missed a fine opening before Borussia Dortmund’s Aubameyang blew a glorious chance after four minutes.
Bouanga’s low cross found the striker at the far post but with the goal gaping he somehow prodded wide.
Robert Ndip Tambe, Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui and Adolphe Teikeu were then off target for Cameroon — with Teikeu missing a fine chance at the far post — while Aaron Appindangoye also headed over for Gabon.
The hosts failed to register a shot on target in the first half and Cameroon turned the screws after the break and Didier Ovono turned Ambroise Oyongo’s low free kick onto the post.
Gabon struggled to break down Cameroon but could have snatched victory at the death when Bouanga’s cross clipped the post and Sunderland’s Didier Ndong could not beat Fabrice Ondoa from the rebound.
Bouanga also wanted a late penalty when he went down in the area but Gabon’s appeals were turned down. (NAN
