The executive chairman of promoted Katsina United, Aminu Balele Kurfi, has said the Nigeria National League (NNL) champions are in the country’s top league to learn.
‘Changi Boys’ Katsina United are back in the Nigeria top-flight league after a 15-year absence.
Last month, they were crowned overall champions of the Nigeria second-tier league after they won the NNL Super 4 in Gombe.
On Sunday, they open their NPFL campaign at home against Gombe United.
Club boss Aminu Kurfi said they are delighted to be back in the elite class of Nigeria football and hope to learn from this experience.
“We are in the NPFL to learn and sustain what we have learnt,” said Kurfi, a graduate of economics who was also involved with the club when they last featured in the premier league and were owned by former NFF president Abdulmumini Aminu.
“We are lucky to now be in the company of some of the country’s top clubs like Rangers and shooting stars. We will learn from them.”
He further praised new coach, Bala Nikyu and his assistant Baldwin Bazuaye.
Nikyu has for several years headed the Nigeria women’s U17 team, the Flamingoes, while Bazuaye has been capped at full international level by Nigeria.
“Coach Bala is a complete gentleman, he is honest, he has a vision and he is focused,” he remarked.
“I am lucky to have him and his assistant, Baldwin Bazauye. I have confidence in my coaches and that is why I have given them a free hand to do their job.”
The club chairman again restated the total support the club have enjoyed from Katsina State executive Governor Aminu Bello Masari.
“The Executive Governor has supported the team even when we were losing matches,” he saluted.
“I believe we are part of the wind of change across the world, which has already seen changes politically in countries like Nigeria, USA, Ghana and The Gambia.
“Money does not mean everything and we will not try to win at all costs. Rather, we are focused and we have set targets for ourselves.” (mtnfootball.com)
