Nigerian sports writers wade into Southern Kaduna crisis; to use sports as unifying force

By Garba Ahmed, Kaduna on December 14, 2016

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) is to involve the Kaduna State Government and corporate organisations in sporting activities as part of efforts to ensure peace, especially in resolving the crisis in Southern Kaduna.

Isaih Benjamin, Chairman SWAN, Kaduna State chapter, disclosed this at the recent 2016 SWAN Week and Awards on Saturday in Kaduna.

While commending the state government for its efforts to ensure that peace reigns supreme in the state, he said SWAN will contribute its own quota in recognising sports as a tool that can further help to unify people regardless of tribe, religion and political affiliation.

“We have resolved, more than ever before to align ourselves with the efforts of Kaduna State Government.

“In doing so, we have decided that in the coming year, we will engage the state, organisations and individuals, particularly the youths, in series of sporting activities as part of efforts to ensure that peace takes the centre stage in the state,” he added.

Benjamin said the week-long sporting activities have been most rewarding as it afforded members the opportunity to relax after pressure from official assignments which are always very demanding with rare opportunity to rest and unwind.

Honour Sirawoo, SWAN National President, described SWAN award as not only recognised in Nigeria but also internationally.

He noted that, it is the first time that a state is hosting all zonal chairmen for SWAN week since the association was established in 1984.

He said that without the media there is no sports, without administration and stakeholders, there is no sports.

“We will give necessary support in the development of sport across nook and cranny of the north,” he assured.

The week witnessed series of sporting activities and competitions among members of the Kaduna State NUJ chapels.
