Ikechukwu Ezenwa, FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s goalkeeper, has given reason he decided to hire a private goalkeeper trainer even when it is not his responsibility to do so. According to the safe hands who is being sought after by clubs in the Spanish La Liga, he decided to hire a goalkeeper trainer in order to be fit as the league is on break following the end of 2015/26 season.
Ezenwa, the only home-based player listed by the Technical Adviser of the National Team, the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, among the players to prosecute the country’s Africa World Cup Qualifying game against the Eagles of Algeria in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital said the desire to ensure that no stone is left unturned for the game in Uyo informed his decision to go the extra mile by hiring a private goalkeeper trainer.
He also explained that his decision to make a private arrangement is to be in top shape is primarily because of the World Cup Qualifier against the Algerian National Team which comes up in Uyo on the 12th of this month. Ezenwa stated this in a Star FM sports programme, Etisalat Mega Sports.
“I decided to recruit a private trainer to ensure that I remain fit during this break following the end of 2015/16 season,” Ezenwa said.
“Of course you also know that we have a very crucial encounter in the Africa World Cup Qualifier against Algeria and we need to do everything possible to ensure that we give good account of ourselves when we file out against Algeria in Uyo.
“I personally take this qualifier as a project that we must accomplish for our dear country. There is need for all hands to be on deck. I took the decision to hire a private trainer primarily because of this World Cup Qualifier in Uyo.
“I know that it is not going to be easy but I also believe we have all it takes to come out with a good result,” Ezenwa explained.
“Of course everybody knows that Algeria is the best football playing nation according to FIFA rankings. And for you to face such a side you need to prepare well that is why I decided to recruit a private trainer in order to be feat for the game going forward.
“Inasmuch as we respect every team, we are a good side and when you consider the calibre of players in Super Eagles, it gives you confidence and I believe that we can deliver on that day because the boys are hungry for glory,” Ezenwa said.
It is recalled that Ezenwa is the only home based player that is among the 23-man players listed for the Uyo encounter. The FC Ifeanyi Ubah goalkeeper was also among the selected Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players that went on the tour of La Liga during 2015/16 league season.
It is imperative to note that due to his outstanding performance during the playing tour of Spain, nothing less than three La Liga clubs are currently seeking his services.
Therefore, it is not surprising that despite Gernot Rohr’s declaration that due to the fact that the Nigeria Professional Football League is on break following the conclusion of the 2015/16 league season no home based player would make the cut for the game in Uyo but due to Ezenwa’s exemplary conduct that decision has been waved for him.
