Delta Force Football Club of Asaba returned to winning ways at the weekend, beating hard-fighting Akwa Starlets of Ikot Ekpene at the Confluence Stadium Lokoja in a Week 13 encounter in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Group B1.
Delta Force, which was banned to the Confluence Stadium in the Kogi State capital for its last home game of the on-going NNL, had entered the game looking to claim all maximum points at stake. They almost opened scoring in the 15th minute when a flurry of shots from the strikers led by Samson Obi were parried by Oto Emmanuel in goal for the visiting Akwa Starlets.
The Coach Clifford Chukwuma-led Delta Force eventually broke the deadlock in the 38th minute after former Akwa Starlets midfielder Okon Aniekeme headed home a corner kick taken by Chinonso Udeh.
The team continued to mount pressure on their opponents but failed to capitalise on the chances created as they continued to fluff chances after chances.
In the second half Akwa Starlets came out looking out for an equaliser but failed in their mission as Delta Force goalkeeper Godwin Ameh stood between them and the goal.
Delta Force central defensive pair of Fabian Nworie and Akposhowobar Martins also kept a level head to frustrate the antics of the visiting team. In the 63rd minute Delta Force striker Samson Obi slammed in a rebound only for the center referee Anna Eliagwu to disallow the goal following a consultation with second assistant referee Marian Usman, who had signaled for a free kick even though there was no infringement before the goal was scored.
In other results in group B1, promoted Remo Stars of Ijebu-Ode claimed all maximum points in Lagos after beating hosts City of David Football Club by two goals to nothing at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere to condemn the Lagos-based side to relegation.
Abia Comets kept hopes alive after forcing hosts UNICEM Rovers of Calabar to a 1-1 draw away at the U.J Esuene Stadium Calabar while Prime FC of Oshobgo pipped visiting Go-Round FC of Omoku, Rivers State, by a lone goal at the Ilorin Township Stadium, to which they had been banished for their last home match.
