Former national team captain and coach, Christian Chukwu, has declared that it is the desire of 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions-in-waiting, Rangers International of Enugu, to kick-start their victory party in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, this weekend when they file out against relegation-confirmed side Ikorodu United in a Week 37 game.
Chukwu made the declaration in exclusive telephone chat with Daily Sports on Friday while speaking to the preparedness of the Flying Antelopes in their crucial engagement to determine whether the 31-year wait for the league shield will end this season.
Rangers are sitting top of the Nigerian Premier League table with 57 points after Week 36 matches; a point better than second-placed Wikki Tourists who have 56 points and third-placed Rivers United who also have 56 points but have less goals advantage.
Ikorodu United seem to have rediscovered their groove as they have recently defeated big names such as Kano Pillars, Enyimba International of Aba and Sunshine Stars of Akure.
But according to Chukwu, the Rangers Technical Adviser, “I don’t think that Rangers have anything to fear concerning the game against Ikorodu United this weekend.
“There is no doubt that Ikorodu seem to have rediscovered the form that helped them gain promotion to the Nigeria Premier League but without taking anything away from them, we have nothing to fear because we have come a long way in this journey. And I don’t think that with the determination and the unity of purpose in the team and in the coaching crew led by Super Eagles’ assistant coach, Imama Amapakabo, Ikorodu will be able to stop Rangers at this stage.
“This is not taking anybody for granted or underrating anybody. Rangers are raring to go and the team are aware of the threat that Ikorodu United pose at the moment particularly with their recent form and results in the Premier League.
“It is our hope to commence victory party in Abeokuta before next week’s final game against El-Kanemi in Enugu. Of course, it has been a long time when Rangers last won the league shield but we believe that, by God’s grace, that long wait will come to an end in few days’ time.”
