Ethiopian athletes dominated the inaugural Yenagoa City International 10KM Race in Bayelsa State, with Habtamu Birhane taking the men’s title in a commanding performance, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Birhane crossed the finish line in 29:23 minutes to claim the top prize of $5,000.
Nigeria’s Gang James and Francis James followed in second and third places, finishing in 29:59 minutes and 30:16 minutes respectively, earning $3,000 and $2,000.
The women’s race was similarly controlled by Ethiopians, with Shewaye Dugo Tolosa winning in 33:50 minutes, followed by Tigist Girma (34:07 minutes) and Gacasho Jilo (34:57 minutes) to complete the podium sweep.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri congratulated the organisers, Nilayo Sports Management, and the State Sports Ministry, praising the event’s potential to showcase the state globally.
“This race has come to stay in Bayelsa, and we’ll do our best to improve on the next edition,” he said.
Yetunde Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management, expressed gratitude for the governor’s support and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to establishing Bayelsa as a hub for long-distance racing.
“We are committed to organising remarkable events that showcase Bayelsa’s hospitality and sporting excellence,” she said.
The atmosphere at the finish line was electric, with spectators cheering and chanting as athletes completed the course.
The maiden edition has laid a solid foundation for what promises to be a regular fixture on the African athletics calendar, combining competitive racing with a scenic venue and substantial prize purse.
