Nwaneri opens up on Nigerian roots News

Marseille attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has spoken openly about his Nigerian heritage after a fresh loan move to the French club from Arsenal, reaffirming a strong personal connection to the country, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 18-year-old joined Marseille during the winter transfer window in search of regular first-team football, having found opportunities limited at Arsenal despite flashes of promise.

Since arriving in France, Nwaneri has made two appearances and scored one goal, making an early impression as he settles into his new surroundings.

Born in England to a Nigerian father and an English-French mother, Nwaneri is eligible to represent three countries at the international level. Although he has previously featured for England at the youth level, he has consistently acknowledged pride in his Nigerian roots.

Speaking during an interview with R.org, Nwaneri was asked about former Nigerian internationals Taye Taiwo and Wilson Oruma, both of whom enjoyed successful spells at Marseille. His response was direct and emphatic.

“Yes, I know. I’m Nigerian, and I am here to help the team as much as possible,” he said.

The comments have added further intrigue to an already closely watched international future.

While no formal decision has been made, interest has intensified following the presence of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle at the Stade Vélodrome during Marseille’s French Cup victory over Rennes this week.

Chelle was in attendance primarily to welcome newly signed Tochukwu Nnadi, but his appearance did not go unnoticed, particularly with Nwaneri’s eligibility and growing profile in focus.

Nwaneri is expected to return to Arsenal at the end of his loan spell in June, with his development in France likely to play a key role in shaping both his club and international future.
