The Nigeria Boxing Federation will conduct a national open trial for the selection of boxers to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games from March 1 to 6 at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, National Stadium, Lagos, The PUNCH reports.
In a letter of notification and invitation addressed to all NBF affiliates on Thursday and signed by secretary-general Vivian Azimene, the federation said the trials are open to all national boxers within Nigeria and in the diaspora, including all affiliated clubs, state associations, and institutions.
The objective of the trial is to ensure a transparent and merit-based selection of the best boxers to represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games.
Participation is mandatory for all Nigerian boxers in the diaspora who wish to be considered for selection.
A registration fee of N10,000 shall be paid by each participating boxer.
The national open trials will feature 10 weight categories, comprising five male and five female categories. Each affiliated club, state, or institution is expected to present one boxer per weight category.
The men’s weight categories are 55kg, 65kg, 70kg, 80kg and 90kg, while the women’s categories are 51kg, 57kg, 65kg, 70kg and 70+kg.
The national open trials will be tagged as “Boxing Week”, during which other boxing-related activities will also take place.
