I'm Joining ADC Not on Any Promise — Obi

By DailySports Nigeria on January 1, 2026

Peter Obi on Wednesday formally declared for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he founded with other opposition parties leaders where he stressed that the event was not a campaign, but a platform for him to openly align with a party he believes can help rescue Nigeria from deepening economic and governance challenges.

Speaking at the gathering held at Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, Obi said his decision was motivated by concern for Nigeria, Nigerians, and the economy, not opposition to any political figure or group. He explained further that after reflecting on the 2023 general election, he felt compelled to re-engage rather than step aside at a time the country faces serious challenges.

“This is not about attacking anyone,” Obi said. “It is about rescuing Nigeria and restoring hope to Nigerians.”

In remarks after the ceremony, Obi dismissed speculation (s) that he had been promised the ADC presidential ticket ahead of 2027.

He said he was joining the party like every other member, subject to its rules and internal democratic processes.

“I am not coming in with any entitlement,” he said. “I am joining as a member, like others who believe in this platform.”

Obi noted that worsening economic hardship, rising poverty, insecurity, and declining confidence in governance pushed him to throw his heart into the ring again, despite the disappointment of the last election cycle. According to him, remaining silent would amount to abandoning a nation in distress.

He added that his political engagement remains focused on peaceful participation, democratic competition, and the protection of votes, with the aim of restoring credibility to elections.

The Enugu event drew supporters and party members from across the South-East, reflecting growing interest in what Obi described as a credible alternative centred on accountability, competence, and economic recovery.

“This journey is not about me,” Obi said. “It is about whether Nigeria works again.”
