I feel lonely at Brighton – Nnadozie

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 4, 2025

Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has revealed the emotional challenges she has faced since joining English WSL side Brighton & Hove Albion, admitting that loneliness has taken a toll on her since the move, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Speaking candidly in Nike and VERSUS’ Nothing Off the Table film, Nnadozie said her transfer has not been as easy as many may assume.

“It has not really been easy because people just see you come out on the field to play, they don’t know the struggles behind,” she said.

The shot-stopper confessed that adapting to life away from her family and familiar surroundings has been particularly difficult.

“Since I moved to Brighton, every day I cry because I feel lonely. I miss my family, my teammates and coaches. They always try to check up on me to make sure I’m okay,” Nnadozie admitted.

Despite the emotional strain, the 23-year-old credited her new club for helping her settle in gradually.

“I think the most important thing is having people who really care about you. That has helped me a lot, and going to the pre-season with the team also helped me. The unity, everything I saw in the team was really good,” she added.

Nnadozie, currently the fourth-best female goalkeeper in the world according to Ballon d’Or rankings, joined Brighton ahead of the new season from Paris FC.

She finished fourth in the Women’s Yashin Trophy rankings at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris in September, becoming the first female goalkeeper from Africa to be recognised at the prestigious event.

The Nigeria Football Federation congratulated Nnadozie on the achievement, with General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi describing it as commendable given the calibre of goalkeepers she was up against.

“Finishing fourth is a big achievement, and we believe in her capacity to win this trophy very soon,” Sanusi had said.

Brighton coach Dario Vidosic praised the Nigerian international following her Ballon d’Or recognition.

“As a club, squad, and everyone affiliated with the women’s programme at Brighton, we are all really proud of them. It’s a fantastic achievement to be recognised for one of the most prestigious awards in the footballing world,” he told the club’s media.

Vidosic reflected on Nnadozie’s achievements with the Super Falcons, who won a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown in the summer.

“They both had a tremendous summer and lifting continental trophies after winning the Euros and WAFCON, it just showcases how important they were to the success of both their national teams,” he said.
