The Nigerian Triathlon Union has fixed September 30, 2026, for its election congress after the decision was made at a virtual meeting held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and attended by 21 executive board members.
The board also approved the electoral committee to be chaired by high-profile sports administrator, Mr Babatunde Fatayi-Williams, a trustee of NTU and former president of the Nigerian Swimming Federation.
Other members of the committee are Mrs Deborah Chidobi from the Nigerian Olympic Committee and Dr Sunday Enimola, Chairman of the Ogun State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association.
The timeline of the electoral process began with nominations on August 20 which will close on September 8, 2026 before the publication of names of candidates on September 12, 2026.
Triathlon, which involves three sports—swimming, biking and running—was established in the early 70s. The International Triathlon Union, the governing body of the sport, was founded in Avignon, France, in 1989.
It is an Olympic sport and gender-equal sport, with women making up one third of the participants.
The Nigerian Triathlon Union, an absolutely private sporting association, was founded in November 2006 by a group of experienced sports administrators who had served in several capacities and positions at national federations.
The group was spearheaded by Dr Lanre Glover, who became the first president of the Union. It included Mr Banji Oladapo, Mr Babatunde Fatayi-Williams and Prince Wale Oladunjoye. Dr Mrs Gloria Obajimi became the first Secretary General of the association.
NTU was admitted as a member of the International Triathlon Union in February 2007 and thereby became a full member of the African Triathlon Union at a Congress in Mauritius in April 2007, with Drs Harry Ladapo and Lanre Glover representing NTU.
NTU gained full membership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee in May 2007.
