CAFCL: Oyowah’s lone goal seals Remo progress

By Daily Sports Nigeria on September 28, 2025

Remo Stars booked their place in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League with a 1–0 win over Comoros champions US Zilimadjou in Abeokuta on Friday, sealing a 5-0 aggregate triumph, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Having taken a commanding four-goal cushion from the first leg also in Abeokuta, the Nigeria Premier Football League champions travelled to the Stade de Moroni with confidence but also a sense of caution, knowing continental away fixtures often present different challenges.

In the end, a composed performance, capped by Alex Oyowah’s 74th-minute winner, was enough to give the Nigerian crowd something to cheer and complete the job in professional fashion.

The tie had been virtually decided in the opening encounter, where Daniel Ogunmodede’s side ran riot. Goals from Leonard Ngege, Ebuka Anthony, Adama Goïta and Samson Olasupo gave the Sky Blue Stars a resounding 4–0 victory that placed them on the brink of progression.

That game underlined the attacking quality of the Nigerians, with their pace, movement and set-piece routines proving far too much for Zilimadjou to handle.

Friday’s return leg offered Zilimadjou a chance to restore some pride, and the hosts began brightly, urged on by a lively home support.

They pressed aggressively in the opening stages, hoping to rattle Remo into mistakes, but Ogunmodede’s men were compact, disciplined and unflustered.

Goalkeeper Adebiyi Obassa and his back line, marshalled by Ngege, kept clear openings to a minimum, frustrating the Comoros champions and gradually quietening the stadium.

Remo were content to manage their advantage and played conservatively, even though they always looked capable of striking on the counter, but their patience was rewarded half an hour into the second half after a cross by Ibrahim Abubakar was handled in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, which Oyowah made no mistake converting.

With the 5–0 aggregate victory, Remo now set up a glamour tie against South African heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns in October.

Sundowns, multiple-time CAF Champions League winners and one of the strongest teams on the continent, will provide the sternest test yet of Remo’s continental ambitions.

The challenge presents both a daunting assignment and an invaluable opportunity for Ogunmodede and his players to measure themselves against Africa’s elite.
