Bassey wins Fulham Player of The Season Award

By Daily Sports Nigeria on June 14, 2025

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been voted as the Player of The Season for Fulham after a remarkable season with the Cottagers in the 2024/25 English Premier League, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Bassey topped the poll with 39.6 per cent of the votes and was followed by his compatriot, Alex Iwobi who scored 21.5 per cent. Left-back Antonee Robinson was third with 19.9 per cent while goalkeeper Bernd Leno (10.9 per cent) and Saša Lukić (8.1 per cent) completed the top five.

The 25-year-old Bassey, who joined Fulham from Ajax in the summer of 2023, has gone one better to claim the prize this year after finishing second in his maiden campaign last year.

A highly dependable figure at the back, Bassey featured in all but three of Fulham’s Premier League fixtures as the team went on to secure a record 54 points haul.

They finished 11th, disappointedly missing out on a European spot which was their aim all season, but Bassey’s contributions were still rated as the best for the team’s success.

“Thank you guys for voting me Player of The Season,” Bassey said.

“I want to thank God – without God, I wouldn’t be where I am. Big up all my team, guys who are not necessarily at the Club, who have been helping me.

“Obviously, thanks to the coaching staff and the Manager for trusting me and believing in me. Hopefully, we can do amazing things next season, so thank you for your support guys.”

In the EPL, Bassey made 35 appearances last season, playing 3,074 minutes. He was selected in the starting XI in 34 of these appearances across their 38 fixtures and was used as a substitute on one occasion.

His number of minutes places him fifth in terms of appearances among other EPL players.

He scored two goals in all competitions. One goal in the EPL, during their 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest on February 15. The Nigerian also scored the opener at Old Trafford during their famous Emirates FA Cup win over Manchester United.

For his compatriot Iwobi, the midfielder recorded what has been his best campaign so far.

With nine goals and six assists, Iwobi finished as Fulham’s second-highest goal scorer behind Raul Jiminez (12).

Iwobi also made history as the first Nigerian to appear in all 38 matchdays in the Premier League for two seasons, after replacing Harry Wilson in Fulham’s home loss to Manchester City on the final day of the 2024/25 campaign.
