Barclays Premier League Week One – Preview

By Daily Sports on August 13, 2016

Hull City vs Leicester City

Newly promoted Hull City will be led by caretaker manager Mike Phelan, who took temporary charge after Steve Bruce left in July.

Phelan said on Friday that Curtis Davies was his only recognised centre-back and would be partnered by midfielder Jake Livermore.

Leicester City have a fully-fit squad for their opening game but defender Robert Huth completes a three-game ban.

Ahmed Musa and Nampalys Mendy could make their Premier League debuts.

Burnley vs Swansea

Swansea have won four of their last five league games against Burnley, including two 1-0 wins in the 2014-15 Premier League season. Burnley's 2-1 victory against Swansea in the Championship in April 2011 is their only win against the Swans in the last 21 years.

Burnley's summer signing Johann Berg Gudmundsson could make his debut but Liverpool loanee Jon Flanagan won't feature because of a lack of fitness. The Clarets hope Stephen Ward will be available despite a recent hamstring problem, but Ashley Barnes may miss out with a similar injury.

Swansea's record signing Borja Baston will not be involved at Turf Moor

Crystal Palace vs West Brom

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew says Yannick Bolasie is in contention to play despite speculation linking him with Everton. James Tomkins, Bakary Sako and Fraizer Campbell are injured, while Pape Souare and James McArthur will be monitored.

West Brom striker Saido Berahino is available despite reported interest from Stoke and Palace. James Morrison and Chris Brunt are out injured but summer signing Matt Philips could make his Baggies debut.

Crystal Palace have won three of their last 13 home league games against West Bromwich Albion (D6, L4). None of the last 22 games between these sides have ended in goalless draws. The last 0-0 came in a second tier match at The Hawthorns in 1999.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspurs

The last four games between the sides have produced a total of six goals - all scored in the first half. Everton are winless in their last seven Premier League meetings with Tottenham Hotspur (D4, L3).

Everton signing Ashley Williams won't feature after starting pre-season late. Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku are doubts with respective ankle and heel injuries, but Phil Jagielka is fit after overcoming a hamstring problem. Victor Wanyama could make his Tottenham debut in place of fellow midfielder Mousa Dembele, who serves the third game of a six-match ban.

Middlesbroug vs Stoke City

Middlesbrough midfielder Grant Leadbitter is out following hernia surgery, while a dislocated shoulder rules out full-back James Husband. Boro are otherwise at full strength, with Daniel Ayala and Bernardo Espinosa fit after recovering from injuries.

Stoke keeper Jack Butland (ankle) misses out, meaning 40-year-old Shay Given or Jakob Haugaard will start. Joe Allen is set for his debut but defender Glen Johnson is doubtful (thigh).

Southampton vs Watford

Southampton full-back Ryan Bertrand will miss the visit of Watford because of a knee injury, while Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares are doubts.

New Saints manager Claude Puel favoured a midfield diamond in pre-season, with Shane Long and Nathan Redmond up front.

Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri will be without new signings Brice Dja Djedje and Isaac Success because of respective foot and leg injuries. Valon Behrami and Adlene Guedioura are doubts as they recover from injuries.

Manchester City vs Sunderland

Manchester City's £47.5m signing John Stones could make his debut in defence, with Vincent Kompany out and Nicolas Otamendi nursing a tendon problem.

New manager Pep Guardiola will be without Leroy Sane (hamstring), while Kevin De Bruyne is short of fitness.

Sunderland signings Adnan Janujaz, Papy Djilobodji, Donald Love and Paddy McNair could all feature in David Moyes' first game in charge. Sebastian Larsson has been ruled out for six months with a knee injury.

Manchester City are unbeaten in 14 top-flight home matches against Sunderland since a 3-2 defeat in the old Division One in December 1981 (W11, D3).  Their last home defeat by the Black Cats came in January 1998 in the second tier.

Sunderland have suffered four straight defeats in this fixture, home and away.

Bournemouth vs Manchester United

Manchester United's world-record signing Paul Pogba is suspended for Sunday's game against Bournemouth. The ban was incurred by Pogba picking up two bookings in last season's Coppa Italia while at Juventus.

Chris Smalling is also banned but new signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly will play.Bournemouth winger Junior Stanislas is out with a hernia problem but £15m club record signing Jordan Ibe is among the likely debutants.

Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last four home meetings with Manchester United in all competitions (W2, D2), including a 2-1 Premier League win in 2015-16.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Arsenal summer signings Granit Xhaka and Rob Holding are expected to make their debuts against Liverpool but defenders Per Mertesacker, Gabriel and Carl Jenkinson are all injured.

Danny Welbeck is also injured, while Euro 2016 finalists Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud are not match fit.

Liverpool may be without Daniel Sturridge and James Milner because of respective hip and heel injuries.

There could be debuts for Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Joel Matip.

Arsenal have lost just one of the 10 most recent league and cup meetings (W5, D4, L1).

Liverpool's only win in their last 20 away trips to Arsenal in all competitions, spanning 15 years, came in the Premier League in August 2011 (W1, D8, L11).

Chelsea vs West Ham

This could be the game of the opening weekend. Antonio Conte may need some time to leave his mark on Chelsea but there is justified excitement at Stamford Bridge after last season’s horrors.

West Ham arrive with two competitive games under their belt after progressing in the Europa League and it will be fascinating to see if Slaven Bilic can improve on last year’s fine performance. (BBC.Com)
