Boniface to get raise in new Leverkusen contract

By Daily Sports Nigeria on December 4, 2024

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are set to reward Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface with an improved contract that will keep him at the club until 2029, amid interest from Manchester United, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Sky Germany reports that Die Werkself are in advanced negotiations with the 23-year-old to extend his current deal, which expires in 2028, by an additional year with a significant pay rise that would make him one of the club’s top earners.

Boniface, who currently earns €3m annually, has been a revelation since joining from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023, scoring an impressive 29 goals and providing 10 assists in 49 appearances as Leverkusen secured their first-ever Bundesliga title and also won the DFB-Pokal last season.

They followed that up with the German Super Cup win this season with Bonifaces scoring he opener in that encounter.

His outstanding performances in his debut campaign also earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award, attracting interest from several European clubs, with Manchester United reportedly leading the chase for his signature.

However, the Nigeria international, who is currently sidelined with a thigh injury sustained on international duty, has previously expressed his preference for Spanish football over the Premier League, stating he would rather play in La Liga if he were to leave Germany.

Transfer expert Patrick Berger revealed that while English clubs are monitoring the situation, Boniface is content at the BayArena and sees his immediate future in the Rhineland.

Despite experiencing two major injury setbacks, an abductor problem last season and his current thigh issue, Leverkusen remain confident in the striker’s abilities and are keen to secure his long-term future at the club.

The proposed contract extension underlines Xabi Alonso’s side’s determination to retain their key players as they look to build on their historic unbeaten league triumph and DFB Pokal success from last season despite a slow start in this campaign.
