On behalf of my family and the entire people of Abia Central Senatorial district, I, Senator Austin Akobundu, celebrate with all Nigerians on this year’s Democracy Day which is June 12. It is a time when we should reflect on the event that led to the declaration and commemoration of June 12 as a day for the celebration of Democracy in our dear country, Nigeria.
In retrospect, June 12 is symbolic because it marks as a turning point in our political history; a Day set aside for the defence and promotion of our Democratic Ideals and ethos. Therefore, it should be a Day of sober reflection and a time to remind us that we as Nigerians should to continue to say No to any assault to our now thriving Democracy as we reecho in our memories the ill-fated June 12, 1993 episode when some remarkable efforts to reintroduce civil rule in our dear country was truncated.
However, Democracy Day came to be because Nigerians in unison said No to any other government that is opposed to Democracy. Unmistakably, our people have since then shown committed interest in Civil Rule with the transition of power from one civilian administration to the other since 1999 when the Fourth Republic commenced.
I appreciate and thank all Nigerians for their steadfastness on democratic rule. It is my firm belief that Democracy is thriving now in our nation in this past 25 years because we collectively resolved to stand, defend and promote it no matter whose ox is gored. I congratulate my compatriots on that. Though, we may not have had it all as we desired in our democratic voyage, but with God on our side, we will surely arrive at our Eldorado.
I want to use this forum to underscore the fact there is no alternative to Democracy. It not only affords us the platform to criticize our leaders and indeed hold them accountable for their deeds and misdeeds in governance, but it gives us a leeway to say our opinions as we want it to be. Interestingly, 25 years under democratic governance has offered us the opportunity to enjoy some dividends of Democracy.
As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, I humbly urge the good people of Abia Central Senatorial district, Abia State and Nigerians as a whole to continue to uphold the tenets and dictates of Democratic Rule. To my people of Abia Central particularly, I enjoin you to join me as your Senator to accomplish my legislative business by contributing your quota towards fulfilling our Democratic Goals. All hands must be on deck. It is my hope that my legislative assignments will, as a matter of necessity, further sustain our Democracy even as we strive to legislate in the most beneficial terms.
I and my party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will always fight and defend the course of democracy and ensure that your welfare and wellbeing are guaranteed in the most remarkable manner.
