Sunshine Stars coach, Kennedy Boboye, is confident that their 2-0 win over Lobi Stars in Akure on Wednesday is the beginning of the much-desired change in the fortunes of the club in the ongoing 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League, The PUNCH reports.
Thanks to two first half goals from Temitope Vincent and Chidozie Iwundu, the Owena Whales recorded their first win in six games and first in three games under Boboye who took over before the start of the second stanza.
Before now, their last win was a 2-0 victory over Doma United, during a match-day 16 game in Akure on December 27.
After the win on Wednesday, Boboye praised his players for showing great character despite their heavy 5-1 defeat against Kano Pillars on match-day 21.
“I have to give kudos to the players because it’s not easy coming back from Kano with a heavy defeat. The momentum was down but we just needed to talk to them and psyche them up that it wasn’t the end,” Boboye said.
“This is the beginning of the turnaround, we just need to concentrate, keep fighting and keep pushing to make sure we get out of where we are. We don’t have any other thing to do than to make sure we win games.”
Sunshine Stars are now out of the drop zone, sitting in 16th position and just two points above relegation and the gaffer is poised to keep up the momentum with their next fixture against his former employers, Heartland.
“We must win to get out of where we are. That is the most important thing. This one is done and dusted, our next target now is against Heartland, we need to get something out of there.”
The Akure side face a trip to the East on Sunday to face the Naze Millionaires who are currently bottom of the table with just 18 points after 22 games.
Before rejoining Sunshine Stars, Boboye had briefly worked with Heartland and took charge of seven games in which he won three, drew one and also lost three.
