Victor Osimhen is a major doubt for Napoli’s Serie A clash against Genoa on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Osimhen, who was expected back in Italy on Wednesday as reported by various Italian media outlets following Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations final last Sunday, briefly returned to Lagos from Abuja after the disappointment of losing in the AFCON final.
According to reports from Il Corriere dello Sport, the 25-year-old also needed to take care of some personal matters and will now rejoin his Partenopei teammates Thursday (today).
The report revealed that his delayed return means he is unlikely to feature for Napoli in their Serie A match against Genoa.
According to Wednesday’s reports, Walter Mazzarri will instead be looking to bring him back into the pack for the Champions League Round of 16 clash against Barcelona next week.
Osimhen would have missed nine competitive Napoli games by the end of the Genoa match on Saturday due to international commitment.
Meanwhile, despite being one of Nigeria’s outstanding players at the AFCON, where he had a hand in four of Nigeria’s eight goals (scored once, provided an assist and won two penalties) at the tournament, the reigning African Footballer of The Year was excluded from the Confederation of African Football AFCON XI.
His compatriots William Troost-Ekong, Ola Ain and Ademola Lookman made CAF’s Bext X1.
