Okumagba dispels rumours of impeachment •Says: ‘I remain Supporters Club Chairman’

Vincent Okumagba, the Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), has stated that there is no division in the club as being dished out to the public by people who felt that it must be business as usual. He alleged that this group of people purportedly gathered miscreants from the Ojuelegba Bridge to carry out the purported impeachment against him when about 15 out of 18 chapters of the club were in Ilorin, having their Chapter Forum on the said date of his impeachment, on the 16th of this month.

He explained that since the said impeachment, some of the state chapters whose names were listed to have signed the purported impeachment have been visiting to deny any knowledge of the purported impeachment as they alleged that their signatures were forged. Okumagba stated this on Saturday at a well attended press briefing in Fadeyi Lagos.

At the event were many of the chapter chairmen, national officers of the club and the Supporter Club members. As a matter of fact, the Supporters Club took off from the venue of the briefing to the stadium in their crowded bus.

“The aim of this media parley is to tell Nigerians that the rumour that is going round town that the National Chairman of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club Chairman has been impeached is not true. I want to place it on record that according to our constitution, the only people that can impeach a national officer is the National Executive Council (NEC) and as I speak to you, there was no NEC meeting held on 16th of July.

“The people that are supposed to form part of the NEC are the state chapters and on that same day, they were at Ilorin having their Chapter Forum. Out of the 18 chapters that we have, about 15 were in Ilorin for that forum. So, I wonder where the 2/3 of members that carried the purported impeachment came from. So, I want to place it on record and to let Nigerians know that there was no such thing and that I remain the National Chairman of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club.

“As you can see, the members that are here are from different state chapters. When they heard the news they came to Lagos and we had our NEC meeting yesterday and I believe that they can brief you after now to tell you the decision we reached yesterday (Friday). But I want to say it very clearly that the Nigerian Football Supporters Club’s headquarters is at No 10 Mabo Street, and that office is the office that I occupy. The one at Ayinde Giwa is not our club. Ayinde Giwa belongs to Nigerian Football and Other Sports Supporters Club.

“We in Nigeria Football Supporters Club believe that Football is what we support. We do not support any other sports except when the need arises. Therefore, I want the world over to know that as at today (Friday), I remain the national chairman of Nigerian Football Supporters Club and that has not changed, and that will not change. As I speak with you, I have the support of the majority of the State chapters; about 13 of them were here on Friday. And they have started writing letters pledging their loyalty to my leadership and I believe that with the support of everyone, with the support of every Nigerian, we are going to go places. We are going to write all those wrongs the people have written against us.

“And let me tell us that our focus is on the Rio Olympics that is ahead of us. We are planning seriously because we believe that we can win the gold medal again having won it about 20 years. So, we are planning seriously for it and by God’s grace, we will storm Rio with large number of our members.

“I remain the authentic chairman of Nigerian Football Supporters Club, the Federal Government has recognised me as such, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development recognised me as such; the NFF also has recognised me as such. All other government agencies have recognised me as such. So, I want the whole world to know that they should not listen to any blackmail that is being executed by people who do not love football, people who are self-centered. As far as Nigerian Football Supporters Club is concerned, we remained united, and everyone that is here supports this administration and we want to remain focused for the task ahead of us which is the qualifiers for the World Cup,” Okumagba said.
