Anambra State Police Commissioner, Aderemi Adeoye has described Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) as an important body in shaping commentaries, moulding opinions and galvanising support for national sports development.
Adeoye made the disclosure when newly elected executives of SWAN in the state led by Chimezie Anaso paid him a courtesy visit at the Command Headquarters, Amawbia.
He said that SWAN is an important body and pivotal pillar of journalism in Nigeria and has done noble services to the country for decades, particularly the national sports teams, and also determined how local teams are perceived globally.
He called on the new executive to keep the flag flying and keep Nigerians informed about sporting activities.
"With the antecedents of SWAN, I have no doubt that you will continue to play an important role in the society. I have no doubt in my mind that your administration will succeed, because you have all it takes," Adeoye said.
He gave an assurance that the command would partner the state chapter of the association in its sporting activities during the state 2023 SWAN week in December, this year.
The commissioner also revealed the plans by the command under his leadership, to collaborate with the sports journalists to organise sports games for the security agencies in the state.
Earlier the state SWAN chairman , Chimezie Anaso extolled the traditional roles by the police in the security component of the society, and more specifically the way the state police command has helped to provide an enabling environment for sports to thrive.
According to him, sports can only take place under a peaceful and tranquil environment, so, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Anambra Chapter is willing and ready to partner with the state police command to evolve that.
He noted that while the police takes care of the kinetic approach to security, SWAN wishes to extend her hand of collaboration in the area of non kinetic approach to ensure a peaceful society.
”It is important to mention that sports is not just an entertainment agent but a reformer and transformer of youths in many societies which if applied becomes profitable.
"Let me assure the CP and declare the willingness of SWAN, Anambra State chapter to collaborate with your command in the effort to evolve a peaceful, secure, and liveable Anambra state where sports lovers can play and compete without fear or hindrance," Anaso said.
