The Anambra state communities soccer tournament tagged "Solution Community Shield Championship" has been scheduled to begin on Oct. 8 at the Awka Township Stadium.
The competition is been organized by the State Football Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, State Sports Development Commission and State Association of Town Unions.
Gov. Chukwuma Soludo will perform the kick off of the tournament aimed at harnessing raw talents from the grassroots and nurture them to stardom.
The competition, the first of its kind in the state, will feature teams from the 179 communities of the 21 local government areas of the state.
The organisers said that the grassroots football competition was been packaged for the governor to dissuade and disabuse the minds of youths from tendencies inimical to their dreams and aspirations
It is also a veritable platform to showcase Anambra as home of abundant soccer youth talents as Super Sports, one of the world’s greatest sports channels will be live to broadcast the matches.
National President of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), Titus Nnabuike Akpudo, said over 140 communities have already indicated interest to participate in the competition.
Akpudo said after the ceremonial opening by the governor in Awka, other matches will take place in the communities on knockout formats.
He said the Sports Committee comprising local government sports chairmen of the Anambra State Football Association, Coordinators of Anambra State Sports Development Commission and ASATU chairmen of local governments will be supervised by state officials.
Others are the Local Government Commissioner, Chairman Anambra State Sports Development Commission and the Chairman Anambra State Football Association, to ensure fair play.
According to him, the winning team will receive a trophy and N2million cash.
Akpudo said the second best team would get N1 million while the third position team will Ike home with N500,000.
He added that there would be best player award, highest goal scorer as well as best keeper awards.
Describing football as a very lucrative business, he said that some of the players might be lucky to get signed by the home and abroad soccer clubs.
He also said that the grassroots football competition would be used to scout for players to form the proposed "Solution Football Team".
