After just a season in the Dutch League with Ajax, Nigeria international Calvin Bassey is set to leave the club after a report that the Eredivisie champions have received an offer of €23m for the defender from a Premier League club.
The 23-year-old left Ibrox in the summer, with the Gers striking a reported £23m deal with Ajax under Ross Wilson, a record sale for the Scottish Giants.
However, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Bassey at Ajax and now there is talk of a bid from the Premier League.
Amid a season of big changes at the Amsterdam Arena, the Nigerian has often been the scapegoat for poor performances and stumbling league form which sees Ajax 3rd in the Dutch top flight.
Now, Dutch pundit Mike Verweij is claiming that Ajax could be set to recoup the money they paid for Bassey as a €23m bid from an unnamed Premier League side lands for the ex-Rangers star.
“To my amazement, a bid of €23mhas been received for Calvin Bassey,” said Verweij told Telesport, which is a podcast run by De Telegraaf in the Netherlands.
“It’s from the English Premier League. I don’t know which club.
“And by the way, some people at Ajax think that he can be sold one day for 40 million Euros.
“I don’t know which club it was, although it won’t have been one in the top five.
“On the one hand, there’s a lot of constructive criticism that has come in for Calvin Bassey this season.
“But also, if you look at him defensively, I can imagine there’s interest from clubs.
“And for English clubs, he would be a good signing too because of the homegrown rules.”
Rangers will hope the deal goes through as they are set for a windfall due to a potential sell-on fee which was negotiated in the contract that saw Ajax sign the Nigerian.
