Remo Stars, Enyimba and Sunshine Stars all picked the last available tickets to the Super 6 play-offs of the abridged 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday, following crucial wins on the final match-day of the regular season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Needing a win to book their place, Remo Stars took their destiny as a matter of urgency, racing to a 4-0 lead at halftime, thanks to goals from Andy Okpe, youngster Seun Odunsi and a brace from Philip Odubia.
Daniel Ogunmodede’s side finished second in Group A with 33 points.
Enyimba were held to a goalless draw by 3SC in Ibadan, but their superior goals difference was enough to get them over the line, despite Akwa United’s 1-0 away win over Gombe United.
The eight-time champions finished third with 32 points with a goals difference of +13, compared to Akwa United’s +10.
In Akure, Sunshine picked the last Super 6 slot in Group B, thanks to a 3-0 win over already relegated Dakkada.
Micheal Olalusi and Nnaemeka Achi scored in the first half, before Udom Ekerete rounded up the game in the 84th minute.
With Rivers United and Lobi Stars already confirmed for the Super 6 before match-day 18, the Owena Whales leapfrogged Doma United into third position with 27 points, after the surprise contenders were beaten 2-0 by Abia Warriors.
Elsewhere, Wikki Tourists were relegated from the topflight despite their 2-0 win over Lobi Stars in Jos. Their 10-year stint in the NPFL came to an end, no thanks to Bayelsa United’s 2-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in Yenagoa.
The northeastern club finished ninth in Group B with 19 points after enduring a tough campaign, which saw them win just five games with four draws and nine defeats.
The club had parted ways with coach Kabiru Dogo almost midway through the season while Abdulahi Adamu who took over the reins also resigned a few weeks later.
