Injured Nigerian and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is making massive progress to return to fitness ahead of his return date and could feature against Milan in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on April 12.
The Nigeria international suffered a muscle injury while on international duty with Nigeria last week during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau and missed Napoli’s Sunday 4-0 loss against Milan in a Serie A at the Stadio Maradona last Sunday.
His unique physical and technical characteristics and impact on matches make him an integral part of Luciano Spalletti’s squad as his absence was severely felt in Sunday’s game.
The 24-year-old is enjoying a brilliant season at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, scoring 25 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions to help Spalletti’s side sit 16 points clear in the Serie A table and reach the Champions League last eight.
Napoli confirmed on Tuesday that their star striker underwent therapies in the morning at the club’s training centre in Castel Volturno.
According to Italian journalist and transfer expert, Paolo Bargiggia, Osimhen is doing everything possible to return early and probably play against Milan.
“I inquired about Victor Osimhen and I can give you some news. The centre forward will do everything to recover as soon as possible,” Bargiggia said as reported by Tutto Napoli.
“The attacker, on Monday, even if it will be Easter Monday, will try to run trying to test his condition. There will be other checks in order to understand if he will be able to play in the Champions League. The goal is to return against Milan.”
This means the Super Eagles striker will not be available on Friday when the Partenopei travel to Lecce at the Stadio Via Del Mare.
The former Lille star has taken Italian football by storm and has become one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, pushing Napoli in their Scudetto chase and seeing them through multiple tests this season.
The Partenopei are now just 15 points away from winning their first Scudetto since 1990.
The Partenopei will meet Milan again in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at San Siro on April 12 and Osimhen could make his return.
Also, Osimhen’s brilliant form this campaign has attracted interest from top clubs in the English Premier League with Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal all keen on signing the Nigerian striker.
