2023 Presidential Election: Cry The Beloved Country

The title, “Cry the Beloved Country”, remains one book that instructively predicted by looking into the future to know the seeds that would grow and the ones that won’t. Summarily, a classic of literature book so popular in schools and colleges in the 1980’s. The author, Alan Paton, a South African probably had Nigeria of today in mind. The author showed how the situation was while crying for a beloved country emphatically said it is even extended to the unborn child.
It stands as the single most important novel in South African literature. “Cry the beloved country” is a 1948 novel, which set in the prelude to then apartheid in South Africa, it follows a black village Priest and a white farmer who must deal with news of a murder.
In Chapter One of the novel, we are introduced to the land. The narrator comments that if the land is destroyed “man is destroyed”, pointing out that the people have a spiritual connection to the land. They care for the land and it cares for them. When the people fail so does the land.
Like in Nigerian state of today since after last Saturday’s highly discredited election, it will be safe to say that as the hills descends into the valley the grass disappears meant that the election manipulators walked well ahead of its rivals in collaboration with Mahood Yakubu’s INEC.
Alan Paton had the fraudulent, giant West African country Nigeria in mind as what INEC shamelessly displayed or posted as Presidential election results, where it declared Bola Tinubu as President elect aptly brought to bear this title written far back in 1948.
Objective Nigerians and international observers have swiftly put a lie on the entire electoral process where INEC boss, Mahood Yakubu raged from his often repeated vow of transmitting results from polling units to INEC server in its headquarters in Abuja. It is no news again that the above sing-song by Yakubu never saw the light of the day. That injustice against Ndigbo today further showed the absence of fairness to a people the Nigerian nation has all along conspired against since after the civil war in 1970.
Ndigbo has exhibited raw sense of resilient spirit that has seen her own in the front line of human endeavours. Peter Obi was a people’s candidate, not Igbo candidate as some people see him. Obi was not a sectional candidate and he got his votes likewise. The daylight robbery was obvious. INEC, Mahood Yakubu and APC were all culpritable in the highly flawed Presidential poll.

No more hiding place in the Nigerian election circle as the best practices in the land can vividly be likened to stolen mandate with impunity. What Mahood Yakubu and his INEC mounted on February 25, as Presidential election can not readily pass as when primary school pupils gathered to do exercise.
In all its ramifications what Yakubu and his INEC said was Presidential election passed as a charade on democracy. Saying it fell below Nigerian peoples expectation is just to put it mildly. Yakubu and his INEC deceived Nigerians that it will use BVAs was not analogue as we saw.
Even international observers described it as big challenge for Nigeria. It was not only marred by violence and intimidation it was also much incomplete. Who announces Presidential election by 2 a.m last Saturday’s election cannot in anyway pass as election as many international observers noted.
The promise by Yakubu and his INEC that the results would be transmitted via BVAs to INEC server in Abuja was never adhered to. Nigerians in Diaspora fault the electoral process. INEC conspiracy with the ruling party during February 25 elections leaves much gap and dent to our electrol process.
The issue of congratulatory messages by countries is purely of where your interest lies not necessarily that the country at the centre of election controversy is right on course. 2023 Presidential election from whatever angle you may be looking at it was never free, fair, credible and transparent with all the arrogance by APC people are displaying.
I kept saying that parties are not the issue in Nigerian context but paramount is the personalities involved. The arrogance APC and its agents are exhibiting is worst than hand twisting. The agents are going round threatening voters if they don’t vote APC they will have themselves to blame as their livelihoods would be destroyed, what is Nigeria turning to, another republic looming?.
Nigerians are yet to come to terms with what hit the polity last week Saturday where Yakubu and his INEC compromised the much anticipated election where everything was at stake. Unfortunately he and his INEC burgled the process like broad day light robbery after many reassurances by the electoral body to Nigerians and international community of seamless polls using BVAS and transmitting directly to the Commission’s server. Sad, the hope of Nigerians have been dashed in a twinkle of an eye by INEC’s incapability, ineptitude and insensitive nature on the collective will of the people.
Many don’t have confidence in the Nigerian Judiciary presently judging from questionable judgments by Supreme Court especially on Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and Godswill Akpabio enroute to the 10th Senate. As we keep our eyes on the ball, keep shooting hard till next week. Meanwhile, we wait!!
