Nigeria international, Alex Iwobi, is optimistic he and teammates can help Everton put an end to their 28-year trophy drought, after impressing in the current season with the club, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Iwobi joined the Toffees from Arsenal on a five-year deal for a fee around £34m in 2019 and has been in superlative form for the Merseysiders since last season, helping them escape relegation at the end of the last Premier League campaign.
It was a tough season for the Toffees, having to fight hard to survive the drop on match-day 27, after beating Crystal Palace 3-2 at Goodison Park to confirm their safety, with Iwobi also turning his form around and becoming one of Everton’s best players towards the end of the season, starting all of their last 12 matches.
The 26-year-old has carried on his form this season, winning the hearts of Everton fans with his work rate, which has earned him a goal and five assists already in 15 Premier League appearances.
With the hope to continue his impressive run when the EPL resumes after the World Cup break, Iwobi says he understands the frustration of the fans.
“Coming to Everton, I know the club is ambitious and trying to achieve something, so, if I can help them, with the rest of the players, that’s what we want to do and we owe it to them,” he said.
Iwobi is currently playing under manager Frank Lampard, with whom he has enjoyed much freedom to operate and also backed his manager to lead Everton out of their struggles.
“I’ll say the club should stick by him. Not just me but all the players appreciate what he has done. He is a hardworking man who puts his job before his family and he’s a very understanding man, so stick by him,” Iwobi told Sky Sports.
Lampard is the sixth manager Iwobi will be playing under at Everton after he was signed by Marcos Silva in 2019.
