Vincent Kompany has hailed Liverpool transfer target Kylian Mbappe and how you can’t stop players of his quality, a bit like ‘Ronaldinho in his prime’, as he told Match of the Day.
The Burnley manager added that the PSG superstar is well aware that he is the best in the world, but most importantly, he ‘backs it up’.
The 23-year-old was the star of the show at the 2018 World Cup in Russia when he scored in the final to help France secure glory and become champions of the world.
And he was back at it again for France’s defence of their title in Qatar when they came up against Australia – he scored and assisted for Les Bleus as they came from behind to win 4-1.
Kompany knows what it’s like facing one of football’s most sought-after players when they locked horns on the international circuit, as the former Belgium star compared him to the likes of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Messi.
“He is smart and sounds rational in everything he says, then I just think he has figured out ‘I am the best in this game’ and he knows it,” said Kompany. “He has a choice to tell us or not and he has decided to tell us – he backs it up.
On playing against Mbappe: “He’s so light, it’s not like you can really lay a glove on him. He’s light and quick. He’s got first, second and third movements before he gets into the box. He is unpredictable. He can run past you one v one, or just be in the box for a tap-in. He has everything.
“He has a bit of Henry and Anelka. A bit of everything. I have really enjoyed watching him. But there are very few players who give you that feeling (difficulty in defending against him).
“Ronaldinho in his prime. Probably Messi in his prime. Cristiano Ronaldo. With these players, there is actually no solutions – it’s very difficult to limit a player like this.”
