A host of Nigerians have taken to social media to hit out at Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, after the Nigeria Football Federation announced that the player had been ruled out of the country’s friendly against Napoli.
Osimhen was initially among the 23-man squad invited by Jose Peseiro for the mouth-watering clash against the 2016 Euro champions but on Monday the NFF said the player had pulled out of the game due to injury and had been replaced with Cyriel Dessers, who has been out for three weeks due to injury.
The report that the 23-year-old striker had suffered an injury has not gone down well with fans because Osimhen was in action for the entire duration for Napoli in their 3-2 win over Udinese, with the striker scoring the first goal of the Serie A clash.
On Tuesday, Napoli released a statement saying that the striker had suffered an injury, a claim that was immediately refuted by an Italian publication, La Gazzetta dello Sport, which wrote that the Nigerian had no physical condition.
Meanwhile, some fans have not received the report well considering the fact that Osimhen last featured in a friendly game for Nigeria in 2019, a game against Brazil where the country played 1-1, meaning the forward has missed Nigeria’s last nine friendly games.
Reacting to this saga, Owoyomi Akinola said, “Please set this guy aside, Nigeria is bigger than all this nonsense. Victor and Napoli always lie to Nigeria. If we will lose let us lose with our pride intact. Forget about Osimhen and give committed players a chance to play for Nigeria.”
A fan on Twitter with username SodeeqAG wrote, “The love Senegalese has for their country is far different from ours. I don’t think Osihmen himself is ready to serve his country. Imagine what Senegal’s coach always does to get his boys to his squad. We all remember what Watford tries doing for Ismaila Sarr and Bayern Munich too for Mane.”
Tobi @com_I_design tweeted, “Just wait until Osimhen loses the trust of Nigerian. How will you not want to play for your country? Big boy ‘isonu’ if it continues like this, don’t call Osimhen up again.”
Wondering when the forward picked up the injury, Chigozie Weezdom asked, “I watched the last match against Udinese, he was fine and he even played the full match.
“How come he’s injured, I even told a friend he will be injured before the match against Portugal and here we are. It’s high time we do away with unserious players we’re bigger than them.”
“Somehow Cyriel Dessers who hasn’t played in how many games because of injury is replacing Victor Osimhen who has been playing regularly because the latter is injured.
“Let’s keep deceiving ourselves,” Zikora Ikpeazu sarcastically wrote.
Convinced that Napoli had stopped Osimhen from honouring the country’s invitation, Okwii Onumonu said, “Osihmen is not injured. I’m sure it’s his club President that has asked him not to honour the invitation.”
Aims added, “I knew Napoli would never risk him playing a baseless friendly just when they need him for their title charge.”
With the leagues on break, Ngwa First Son wrote, “I thought leagues are on break now. Which one is that Osimhen is injured again? The other players coming to play the friendly don’t have clubs paying their salaries right? This rubbish precedence we’re setting will come to hurt our national team someday.”
Bolarinwa Yusuf queries Osimhen’s loyalty to the country.
“I love Osimhen but we can’t condone this attitude from him again. For real, it’s embarrassing for the country. Players don’t even want to come for matches, how do you gel together as a team? Later, we keep blaming the coaches. That’s why I always respect Alex Iwobi, good or bad days, friendly or no friendly, he makes himself available.”
