Former Super Falcons winger, Stella Mbachu, says there is no need to panic, following the Super Falcons’ five-game consecutive losing streak.
The former African champions lost the semi-final and third-place games at the WAFCON in August, before losing friendlies to the USA (twice) and Japan.
Falcons coach Randy Waldrum has come under scathing criticisms following his side’s poor run, but Mbachu has called for calm as the team continues its preparations for the 2023 World Cup.
The 44-year-old Mbachu, in a chat with The PUNCH, said Waldrum was using the friendlies to access the players and prepare the team for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
“The coach is taking his time to build his team, get to know the players, and bring new players to the team. The ones that played in the friendlies against the United States are not the same set of players that went with the team to Japan. So, the coach is trying to assess the players and bring in the U-20 players to join the team.
“There is no need to worry because the World Cup is still nine months ahead, let the coach take his time to test all the players and know the ones that best fit his plans for the tournament.”
The Falcons suffered a 2-0 defeat against Japan in a friendly at the Noevir Stadium in Kobe last Thursday.
The defeat came just weeks after a two-match tour of the United States of America, in which they lost 4-0 and 2-1 to the USWNT, meaning the Falcons have now lost five straight matches since their WAFCON win over Cameroon in July.
The World Cup will be staged in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
