I Laboured In Vain - Aribo laments over Southampton's loss

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 4, 2022

Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo has expressed his disappointment over Southampton’s 2-1 loss to Everton on Saturday.

After missing the international break it seemed Aribo had gotten ample time to work his way into Ralph Hasenhüttl’s heart, as the German tactician gave him the nod to start against the Toffees.

Aribo rewarded his boss with a goal in the second half which put Southampton in pole position to win the game. However, Everton had other ideas.

Former Wolverhampton man Conor Coady restored parity in the 52nd minute before Iwobi’s beautiful pass found Amadou Onana, who fired past a helpless Bazunu to ensure the Toffees ran out with a 2-1 result.

Aribo scored his second goal of the season, but the Super Eagles star was left frustrated, especially because his Southampton side was pretty wasteful in front of goal.

“The boys are really disappointed. Going a goal ahead, it’s really frustrating to concede so soon, and the boys are disappointed because we wanted to get a result and that wasn’t the case,” Aribo told Southampton.com.

“I was thinking about it earlier today, that we’ve been coming from behind, so to get a goal ahead was a good feeling.

“To concede so soon is bitterly frustrating, and I and the boys were really not happy about it. We need to go back to the drawing board, focus, and learn from our mistakes.

“That’s the Premier League. Sometimes if you don’t take your chances, you get punished – that’s the game. If you make mistakes, you get punished also.

“We just need to recover because the games are coming thick and fast, and we need to be ready.

“The squad is big, so everyone needs to be focused. We need to work together, be strong, be a unit, and be ready to go.”

The home loss to Everton leaves Southampton just two points above the relegation zone in 16th position.

Southampton have lost three consecutive games, and it could become four soon, except they produce a great performance when they travel to Manchester City next week.
