Samson Siasia has once again voiced his frustration over the behaviour of Arsenal and Manchester City towards the release of Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho for the football tournament of the Rio Olympic Games.
In what has become a recurring theme of Nigeria’s preparation for the Games, the U23 gaffer is none too pleased about this development as Goal reported on Monday.
Speaking with media in Abuja on Tuesday, Siasia also revealed that Arsenal are not keen on letting the 19-year-old Iwobi participate at the Olympics, with the club said to prefer that the youngster stays behind for a full pre-season with the first team.
“The chances of Iwobi going to the Olympics depends how well his father is able to make Arsene Wenger have a change of mind. Alex is a young man who will benefit much from playing against big stars like Neymar. He would be a great asset for us at the games,” Siasia said.
“Manchester City are not forthcoming regarding the release of Kelechi Iheanacho for the Rio Olympic Games. They are yet to respond to the letter asking for his release and Kelechi is not helping with his attitude. I need him and Iwobi but if they are not released to us, we manage what we have,” he concluded.
The final of the football event is on August 20, meaning Iheanacho and Iwobi could miss their respective clubs’ opening two games of the 2016/17 English Premier League season if Nigeria progress that far in Rio.
The Dream Team VI have been drawn to face Sweden, Colombia and Japan in Group B of the men’s football event starting on August 4. (Goal.com)
